    Job Summary

    Within one of the nation’s most transformative universities, SJSU’s Student Wellness Center (SWC) fosters student opportunity in a revolutionary way by preparing students to maintain lifelong health and well-being. Services provided by the Student Wellness Center include, but are not limited to, primary medical care, counseling and psychological services, health promotion/prevention, sexual health education and support (including the provision of medication abortion services), and other coordinated care services (including gender-affirming care). It is expected that all SWC employees engage in the administration of these services as applicable to their position, scope of practice, and license. In addition, the Student Wellness Center provides limited initial care for work injuries of employees, and, if necessary, assists in referring such persons for ongoing care. The Student Wellness Center may also provide first aid to campus visitors. Limited evening or weekend work may be expected to support campus events. Reporting to the Director of Health Services and receiving operational direction from the Lead Physician, the Primary Care Physician provides a variety of primary medical outpatient services in accordance with the overall operation of the SWC. Working independently, the Primary Care Physician performs medical, diagnostic, treatment, and counseling activities which require a licensed physician and are within the scope of the program established by the Board of Trustees. The incumbent has the added responsibility of providing highly specialized and/or broad clinical duties that include planning, coordinating, and evaluating ongoing medical care of students. Collaboratively supporting student success in the bottom line purpose of this and all Student Wellness Center positions.

    Key Responsibilities
    • Examine patients, diagnose illnesses and injuries, and develop treatment plans including prescribing and administering medical treatments
    • Order and interpret diagnostic tests, including laboratory results, electrocardiograms, and x-rays
    • Counsel and educate patients/students on related medical/personal problems and health measures, including routine immunizations
    • Perform office procedures which include wound care, suturing, incision and drainage, splinting, trephination of subungual hematomas, and cryotherapy of skin lesions
    • Perform various physical examinations, including gynecologic, academic, sports, DMV, pre-employment, scuba, and respirator physicals
    • Provide sexual health education, counseling and care, including administration of medication abortion services
    • Provide follow up on treatment to ensure the appropriate resolution of illness or injury
    • Cooperatively participate in staff meetings, SWC committees, and in-service training, AAAHC Accreditation, and health education projects
    • Propose and prepare studies, records and reports in support of SWC quality control efforts
    • Research topics and makes presentations, conducts training and seminars, and consults with campus faculty and staff as requested


    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a diverse, multicultural population in a university community
    • Thorough understanding of general medicine, public health principles, and diagnostic clinical decision-making, with the ability to provide treatment and medical counseling
    • Demonstrated ability to efficiently prioritize patients’ problems based on urgency and demonstrated critical thinking to perform accurately in a detail-oriented environment
    • Ability and manual dexterity to perform patient care tasks, along with capacity to quickly assess emergency situations and take prompt action
    • Working knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations, as well as the ethics and standards of practicing medicine, enabling compliance with policies and procedures
    • Ability to quickly learn and apply a variety of state, federal, CSU and SJSU policies and procedures
    • Ability to prepare comprehensive case histories and handle multiple work priorities effectively
    • Thorough knowledge of English grammar, business writing, punctuation, and spelling, enabling effective correspondence and report formatting
    • Technical skills to work with medical records and scheduling software; acuity in learning new software as applicable to position responsibilities
    • Excellent customer service and public relations skills, facilitating effective communication across a variety of venues
    • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications


    Required Qualifications
    • Graduation from a medical school and completion of one or more residency programs and/or fellowships accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or equivalent in a specialty appropriate to their assigned primary duties.

    Physicians - Primary Care must possess and maintain:
      • A valid license to practice medicine in the State of California
      • Current board certification in an American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) specialty or subspecialty appropriate for their assigned specialty duties
      • A valid Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registration and number for prescribing controlled substances.
      • Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator (CPR/AED) certification as appropriate for the assigned duties


    Preferred Qualifications
    • At least one (1) year of clinical experience in a college health setting or similar environments
    • At least one (1) year of demonstrated proficiency in suturing and/or performing minor surgeries (those without anesthesia)
    • At least one (1) year of clinical experience including mental health/behavioral care competence


    Compensation

    Classification: Physician - Primary Care
    Anticipated Hiring Range: $16,667/month - $19,700/month
    CSU Salary Range: $13,406/month - $22,768/month
