    The City of Menlo Park is a great place to work! We are now hiring Recreation Specialists to provide hands-on support for a wide variety of programs including youth programs, recreation and sports programs, food preparation, and senior center programs for approximately 10-20 hours per week. This is an exceptional job opportunity for enthusiastic and responsible applicants to join the City of Menlo Park team and gain valuable work experience with an outstanding local government. This hourly, at-will, part-time (non-benefited) position offers paid work experience, a flexible part-time schedule, and on-the-job training and support. Shifts are available mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends.

    The City of Menlo Park currently has part-time Recreation Specialist job openings in the following areas:
    • Gymnastics programs for youth
    • After school programs for youth
    • Recreation center customer service
    • Sports/gymnasium customer service
    • Kitchen and food preparation

    Recreation Specialists provide a variety of hands-on support activities to an assigned program or division. Recreation Specialists are expected to:
    • Provide professional and courteous customer service at all times
    • Provide hands-on operational support in City recreation centers, sports facilities, youth programs, and/or nutrition and food service programs
    • Set up, arrange, and take-down furniture and equipment for classes, rentals, meetings, and special events
    • Effectively use, learn and perform tasks on recreation software systems
    • Monitor the proper and safe use of City facilities by the general public and ensure adherence to rules and policies
    • Ensure the cleanliness and safety of facilities throughout the day
    • Demonstrate proficiency with word processing, data entry and organization


    Depending on the specific work assignment, Recreation Specialists also are responsible for:
    • Leading children in organized youth programs and activities
    • Food preparation and food service in City nutrition programs.
    • Handling money and electronic transactions
    • Organizing class sign in sheets
    • Monitoring, organizing, and running community programs


    Ideal Candidate

    Minimum Requirements
    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Two years of paid experience working in a recreation program-type setting.
    • Must have experience supervising children, teens, adults, and/or seniors.

    Salary
    Recreation Specialist: $18.64 - $22.24 per hour

    These are non-benefited, temporary positions. A temporary employee may not work more than 1,000 hours per year and will receive sick leave in accordance with State law.

    Menlo Park was founded November 23, 1927, as a general law city under the State of California and operates under the council-manager form of government. The City Council appoints the City Manager and City Attorney as well as members of a variety of commissions and committees. City departments that report to the City Manager include Administrative Services, the City Manager’s Office, Community Development, Community Services, Library, Police and Public Works.

    In addition to its many attributes, Menlo Park has one of the most beautiful civic center campuses in the Bay Area. Lush landscaping including heritage trees, a running fountain and a duck pond surrounds the City Hall / Administration Building.     City Council


    The City Council is the City's five-member governing body whose members serve at-large for four-year overlapping terms in general municipal elections. The City Council selects from among its members, the Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem to one-year terms at its first meeting in December of each year. The Mayor, who represents the City of Menlo Park, serves as the presiding officer of the City Council and signs enacting ordinances and contracts. The Menlo Park City Council meetings are generally Tuesdays at 7 p.m. at the City Council Chambers located at 701 Laurel Street. Menlo Park’s City Councilmembers serve part-time, retaining their positions in private industry, personal enterprise, business or the professions.
