    Job Location: This position will be located at 1000 E. 24th Street. Kansas City, MO

    This is senior-level professional and/or supervisory nursing work in a state agency.

    • Functions as the nurse in charge of an assigned shift on a ward or unit that requires close professional supervision; or performs independent nursing duties which require the application of specialized nursing skills.
    • Assigns, supervises, and evaluates the work of other Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, direct care, and/or other staff in the care and treatment of patients/clients on a ward or comparable living area.
    • Serves as a nursing team leader responsible for defining and implementing the nursing care plan for assigned patients/clients and for supervision of nursing team members. Conducts nursing assessments and develops nursing diagnoses and care plans. Participates in developing individualized treatment plans as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team.
    • Trains and evaluates nursing staff, direct care staff, and nursing students.
    • Administers medications and treatments as prescribed by a physician; conducts rounds with and informs physicians of patient/client status, and receives instructions for further care and treatment. Documents patient/client status on clinical charts and reports on progress.
    • Performs assigned duties independently according to instructions and established nursing standards and procedures; work is reviewed by supervisors for conformance with established policies and effectiveness of nursing procedures. Performs other related work as assigned.
    • Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance; arrives to work on time, returns from lunch on time and minimizes unscheduled absences.


    Minimum Qualifications:

    • A Master's degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university. OR
    • A Bachelor's degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university; and, One or more years of professional experience as a Registered Nurse. OR
    • An Associate's degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university or a Diploma in Nursing; and, Two or more years of professional experience as a Registered Nurse.
    • Only regular non-probationary employees are eligible to bid. (Internal candidates only)
    • No disciplinary actions within the last twelve (12) months. (Internal candidates only)


    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Comprehensive knowledge of professional nursing theory, practices, and standards.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of pharmacology, therapeutic diets and nutrition, aseptic techniques, and other basic natural and social sciences necessary to provide professional nursing care. Introductory knowledge of management principles and techniques as applied to nursing administration. Ability to supervise, evaluate, and instruct professional and paraprofessional nursing staff. Ability to assess patients/clients with mental or physical illness and/or developmental and physical disabilities, make nursing diagnoses, and formulate nursing care plans. Ability to direct and administer detailed therapeutic prescriptions and nursing interventions. Ability to observe, recognize, and identify deviations in the conditions of patients/clients.
    • Ability to work assigned schedule which may include a variety of shifts, weekends, and/or holidays. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, patients, and their family membersEmployee must be current in mandatory training requirements and department job-specific competencies. Being current in policies will be a consideration in selecting the most qualified candidate for awarding positions. Have not received a successful bid for a posting within the last ninety (90) days.
