Job Appointment: Regular, Full Time
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, alternate schedule may be available.
Work Location: Hybrid- This position will report to the Portland Building (1120 SW 5th Ave, Portland, or 97204) for in person work. Remote work must be performed within Oregon or Washington. Position Summary
The Assistant Controller will assist the Controller with the management of the Accounting Management Division. The position will rotate through the Division assisting each of the three sections, as needed, and provide support to the City's Chief Financial Officer.
As an Deputy Controller, you will:
- Provide assistance with the reporting, operations and financial systems and training teams wherever needed.
- Look for opportunities to improve workflow, process and policies throughout the Division.
- Coordinate the development of a variety of policies related to accounting activities at the City.
- Participate in system updates and improvements: Assess problematic procedures, and recommend, document and implement solutions in cooperation with the Controller and City technical staff. This will expand dramatically in the future as the City migrates to SAP S4.
- Audit schedules: Prepare and oversee the preparation of a variety of reports required by the auditors for the City's financial and single audit.
- Learning/teaching: Constantly study the changes in technology, accounting and grants management, and passing that knowledge to the teams, upwards to leadership, and across the City to the

To Qualify
The following minimum qualifications are required for this position:
- Ability to learn and adapt to the ever-changing environment of accounting and technology (This is important in order to keep up with the evolution of the accounting profession and the City of Portland.)
- Knowledge and experience in the areas of Single Audit and information technology including major software implementations.
- Knowledge and experience with the principles of management, supervision, training and performance evaluation.
- Experience analyzing and making sound recommendations on complex financial operations, accounting systems, procedures and controls, and development of financial policies.
- Ability and experience communicating effectively, orally and in writing, to a diverse variety of internal and external audiences.
- Ability and experience developing and maintaining effective working relationships to gain cooperation through discussion and collaboration. Although not required, you may have one or more of the following:
- CPA license preferred.
- A bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with a major course work in accounting or finance.
- Four years of progressively responsible experience in accounting or finance.
- Two years of supervisory experience.
- Experience with SAP or other large ERP system.
