    The Food Science and Nutrition Department in the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, CA, is seeking a full-time, academic year, tenure-track Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor of Clinical Nutrition/Medical Nutrition Therapy starting September 11, 2025.

    The successful candidate will build upon Cal Poly’s reputation and strong position within the medical nutrition therapy/clinical nutrition industry. Teaching responsibilities may include medical nutrition therapy / clinical nutrition related courses and other teaching responsibilities in undergraduate and graduate courses in the nutrition programs of the Food Science and Nutrition department.

    The incumbent will be expected to participate in the Master of Science in Nutrition program, supervise graduate students, team-teach, and teach graduate-level and online courses.

    The successful candidate is expected to participate in scholarly activities (i.e., research, grant writing, publications, presentations) related to clinical nutrition, broadly defined, as part of their professional development. Research collaboration with undergraduate students is particularly valued. The successful candidate is also expected to provide service on committees for the department, college, and university, as well as service to community, state, national, and professional organizations.

    Grade and salary commensurate with education and experience of the individual selected. Anticipated hiring ranges:
    Assistant Professor: $90,948-105,156
    Associate: $105,492 - 114,720
    Full: $123,360 - 132,288

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
    • An earned doctorate (PhD, DrPH, DSc, DCN, etc.) in Human Nutrition or closely related field. Candidates nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered but must provide proof that the doctorate was completed prior to the start of the appointment.
    • By start of appointment, provide a Verification Statement indicating completion of a dietetic internship program accredited by the ACEND, or evidence of completion of an international program granted reciprocity by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
    • Demonstrated commitment to and evidence of quality, student-centered learning and teaching.
    • Evidence of potential to develop a successful academic research program at Cal Poly, including external funding and publications.
    • Demonstrated ability to collaboratively work in multidisciplinary settings.
    • Effective communication and interpersonal skills. Excellent written and oral communication skills, with demonstrated proficiency in the written and oral use of the English language.
    • The ability to be a productive team player and to interact well with peers, students, industry, government agencies, and the general public is essential.
    • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching, research and/or service, and demonstrated commitment to inclusive practices and working with a diverse student body.
    • Particular attention will be given to candidates who have productive records of teaching, scholarly activity, and student-involved research that would strengthen current department activities.

    PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS
    • RD/RDN credential
    • Clinical nutrition experience as an RD/RDN
    • Relevant, recent (past 10 years) experience in clinical positions providing patient care
    • Experience teaching MNT or clinical nutrition in higher education.
    • Post-doctoral research experience in research related to clinical, medical nutrition therapy, or other relevant themes.
    • Specialty certifications in dietetics, e.g., renal, nutrition support, diabetes, etc.

    Preference will also be given to those who bring professional capabilities, including working with diverse populations and fostering a collaborative, supportive, and inclusive environment.

    SPECIAL CONDITIONS

    The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

    ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

    The Food Science and Nutrition Department’s strategic vision is to prepare the food science, nutrition and dietetics professionals of tomorrow via experiential learning and leadership experience. Graduates will have the critical thinking, foundational knowledge, and technical skills to solve the challenges related to the health of the community and sustainable and safe food systems. The department has 14 full-time faculty, 2 full-time lecturers, many part-time faculty, support staff, and approximately 600 students in two majors. The department hosts a dynamic and innovative Nutrition program that encourages national as well as international perspectives on teaching and research. The Nutrition curriculum includes two concentration options: Applied Nutrition and Nutrition Science. The Applied Nutrition concentration is accredited by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The department also offers multiple nutrition graduate degree options including a traditional MS in Nutrition, a combined MS in Nutrition and Dietetic Internship, and a blended BS/MS in Nutrition.
