Job Description

Through a grant obtained by the Burlingame School District, the Parks and Recreation Department is partnering to offer an afterschool program on each of the 6 elementary schools and to 6th grade students at BIS. BPRD is looking for individuals who have a passion to work with youth.

This position will be afterschool hours until 6:30pm, Monday through Friday.

This is a temporary, part-time position and shifts may vary depending on the program and type of Recreation Leader (not to exceed 1,000 hours per fiscal year)

About the Position:

The position is under the direct supervision of the Recreation Department.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as a mentor and role model for participants, creating a positive and inclusive community on campus.

Typical duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Pick up students from Enrichment classes
  • Provide activities until 6pm

Knowledge of:

Philosophy, methods and techniques used in planning and leading recreation programs as well as knowledge of safety, recreation equipment and materials.

Ability to:

Plan, organize, and lead a variety of recreational activities. Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to assimilate and understand information in a manner consistent with the essential job functions. The ability to relate effectively with the public.

Education and Training:
  • Experience in recreational activities, effective communication and interaction skills with youth, and ability to collaborate with staff. Must be at least 15 years old.
  • Recreation leader 1 and 2: Students under the age of 18 are required to obtain a work permit from their school. All staff 18+ are required to pass a fingerprint check submitted to the Department of Justice.
  • Sr. Recreation Leader: Sufficient education and experience to satisfactorily perform the duties of the classification.

License:
  • Valid California Class C driver’s license with satisfactory driving record.

Mandatory paid training dates:
  • Complete Mandated Reporter Training (will be provided by City)
  • Complete First Aid and CPR/AED Training (will be provided by City)

Benefits

Healthy Workplaces/Healthy Families Act: California Paid Sick Leave Benefit, as amended effective 1/1/2024. This benefit accrues at the rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked and is available after 90 days of employment. The maximum use of paid sick leave is 40 hours in a one-year period. There is no cash value associated with benefit.

No other benefits are offered. This position is at will and is not part of the City's Civil Service System. There is no guarantee of hours and employment may end at any time.
