Job Description

The Position

The City of Riverside is accepting applications for a part-time position of Technical Intern to fill one (1) vacancy in the Traffic Engineering Division division of the Public Works Department.The eligibility list established may be used to fill the current and/or upcoming vacancies within this classification for up to six (6) months.

The ideal candidate will provide engineering services for the design of traffic improvement projects including signing and striping plans, traffic control plans, and traffic signal plans improvements. Additionally, the selected individual will work on preparation of plans, specifications, and cost estimates for advertising projects to solicit bids from qualified construction contractors. This individual will also prepare proposal request for contract & consulting services, transportation and traffic reports, memos, studies and will perform field work as necessary. The City of Riverside Public Works Department is responsible for managing 500+ traffic signal systems and almost 900 lane miles. The Technical Intern (Traffic) performs professional and highly skilled municipal engineering work in the design, investigation, evaluation, and construction of public works improvement projects.

Additionally, the ideal candidate will have exposure to or is interested in the field of traffic engineering and / or transportation planning. Experience in working with a public sector and / or customer service is desirable. Willingness to learn and can complete tasks assigned independently with supervision. Ability to conduct field observations and accurate document inventory items. Flexible part-time work schedule. Finally, the ideal candidate will have introductory experience and be familiar to AutoCADD software.

Under general supervision, a Technical Intern will perform entry level technical duties; assist in various types of work designed to complement and supplement existing City programs; and do related work as required.

Work Performed

Depending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Perform basic technical assignments in area of specialization.
  • Assist technical staff and respond to requests for information.
  • Collect, summarize, and analyze information and statistics on existing programs and services.
  • Prepare and evaluate reports.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of procedures, guidelines, and standards.
  • Perform research in the resolution of technical concerns and/or problems.


Qualifications

Recruitment Guidelines:

Education: Current enrollment in, or completion within the last five years of, a program from an accredited post-secondary educational or vocational institution with major coursework related to a specialized field of study.

Experience: None required.

Highly Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience in a public agency or private firm working in a city, county, regional or state regarding engineering projects.
  • Working towards a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or urban planning or closely related field from an Accredited ABET college or university
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite - Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Proficient in AutoCADD.
