Introduction

Auditor Salary Range: $78,790.40 - $106,433.60 Annually
Sr. Auditor Salary Range: $91,208.00 - $123,198.40 Annually
Anticipated starting salary may be up to mid-point depending on candidate's experience and internal equity.

About the Position:
Conducts complex, comprehensive financial, compliance, information systems, and/or performance audits of City divisions, departments, programs, units, or businesses having contracts with the City. This work involves planning audit procedures;
evaluating internal controls; collecting, evaluating, and interpreting relevant data and records; performing complex data analyses; conducting interviews; observing operations; assessing alternatives for improvement; and writing clear and convincing reports. The responsibilities are carried out both through collaborating in teams and performing individual
assignments.

The City Auditor's Office primarily conducts performance audits under Government Auditing Standards. Candidates for Senior Auditor should have relevant experience in conducting performance and/or operational audits. The successful candidate also demonstrates strong critical thinking and analytical skills, attention to detail, and interpersonal and communication skills.

This position may be filled as an Auditor, with the opportunity for promotion into the Senior Auditor position based on qualifications and job performance. The minimum requirements for both positions are listed below in the Minimum Qualifications section.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience
Sr. Auditor:
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited educational institution.
  • Four years of full-time professional experience as an internal auditor or in a closely related field conducting financial, compliance, information systems, and/or performance audits.
  • A Master's Degree in job-related field may substitute for one year of required professional experience.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and/or job-related experience that meets the minimum qualifications may be substituted.
  • Preferred: Degree with major coursework in a job-related field.
Auditor:
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited educational institution.
  • One year experience conducting financial, compliance, information systems, and/or performance audits, or related analysis.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and/or job-related experience that meets the minimum qualifications may be substituted.
  • A Master's Degree may substitute for one year of related experience.
Licensing, Certifications and Other Requirements
  • Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted driver's license with no major citations within the past 39 months prior to the start date. The Arizona Department of Motor Vehicles requires that out-of-state driver's licenses must be surrendered within 10 days of relocating to the State of Arizona.
  • Preferred Certifications:
    • Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), or other closely related certification.
  • Every person employed by the City of Scottsdale shall reside in the State of Arizona during his or her active employment by the City, regardless of whether the employee is approved to remote work.
Other pertinent licenses and/or certifications may be required of some positions depending on division/department/services assignment.

Essential Functions

Performs duties and responsibilities commensurate with assigned functional area which may include, but are not limited to, any combination of the following:
  • Plans, organizes, and conducts complex audits, reviews, investigations, and special projects as assigned.
  • Studies, analyzes, and reaches sound conclusions from interviews, records, data, observations, and other audit procedures.
  • Communicates effectively to obtain information and assist audited areas in understanding audit results and recommendations.
  • Prepares concise, comprehensive, well-organized working papers and written reports to accurately and effectively communicate audit work, conclusions, and any recommendations.
  • Collaborates with the City Auditor and audit team members to evaluate audit risks, evaluate controls, and design audit programs to satisfy the audit objectives in accordance with professional auditing standards.
  • Manages and tracks time to accomplish the audit program; conducts and evaluates adequacy of the designed fieldwork; and continually communicates with supervisor, team members, and the auditee.
  • Leads, counsels, and provides on-the-job training for internal auditor staff assigned to assist in the completion of work.
  • Drives to other locations to perform/complete audits and for trainings.
