The Position

Environmental Scientists perform program research, planning and development, permitting, compliance monitoring, inspections/enforcement, and technical support services in relation to air, water, waste, federal facilities, corrective action, mining, biology and other environmental programs.

Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.

This recruitment is for an Environmental Scientist 2 underfill the Environmental Scientist 3 within the Bureau of Air Quality Planning, located in the Carson City office. The position is a field site operator in the Ambient Air Monitoring Branch. Our branch operates a network of ambient air monitoring stations throughout Nevada to measure concentrations of pollutants considered harmful to the public and environment. This data is used to determine EPA compliance and provide real-time air quality information to the public. The ES 3 responsibilities include regular site visits to operate and maintain ambient air monitoring equipment; maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment in the air monitoring lab; evaluating new and existing monitoring sites; public outreach to communicate how air quality impacts people's lives; preparation of technical documents and reports; analyzing air pollution trends or events and the projected impacts on federal, state, and local regulations; and interacting with the general public, federal agencies, and members of the regulated community. Experience diagnosing and repairing air monitoring instruments or other electronic equipment is preferred. This position requires 25 - 50% travel. To Qualify:

In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in the physical, natural resource or life sciences, engineering or closely related field and 18 months of professional environmental experience which involved environmental program research and planning; OR graduation from high school or equivalent and three and a half years of professional environmental experience as described above; OR 18 months of experience as an Environmental Scientist I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Requirements A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
