Job Description

To learn the principles and practices of law enforcement work in the Sheriff's Department; to participate in required training courses; and to perform routine, non-enforcement duties.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the trainee level of the Deputy Sheriff series. Incumbents are expected to attend a basic POST approved police academy, or perform non-enforcement duties.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Supervision is provided by a Sheriff's Sergeant, or other higher level line officer.
Functional or technical supervision may be provided by a Deputy Sheriff II, or a higher level line officer.


Typical Duties

Participate in all required training programs.

Read and study technical and legal materials pertaining to law enforcement procedures and policies.

Participate in written and job skill examinations to demonstrate newly learned skills and knowledge.

Participate in weaponless self-defense training.

Receive and process prisoners.

Guard and escort inmates within the jail and other correctional facilities.

Maintain records of Sheriff's Department equipment and supplies, and the personal property of inmates.

Examine prisoner's mail for contraband.

Answer telephone inquires regarding the status of inmates.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum qualifications are used as a guide for establishing the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license which are required and equivalent to the following.

Knowledge of:
  • Math sufficient to compute percentages, decimals and fractions.


Skill/Ability to:
  • Work and communicate effectively with people of various education and socioeconomic backgrounds by respecting beliefs, interpersonal styles and behaviors of both clients and co-workers.
  • Operate contemporary office equipment inclusive of computer, keyboard, and all applicable electronic equipment.
  • Gather, interpret, and compare technical data.
  • Follow oral and written instruction.
  • Retain and recall information.
  • Accurately record information from oral and written sources.
  • Read, research, understand, and apply technical materials.
  • Communicate and deal with other employees, supervisors, and inmates under conditions requiring tact, patience, courtesy, and judgement.
  • Work under stress.


Education :
  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.

License or Certificate:
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain an appropriate, valid California driver's license.

Benefit Amount:

Employee Only: $248.58
Employee + one dependent: $359.96
Family: $545.75

Health Insurance:

Retirement:
The retirement plan is a defined benefit plan administered pursuant to the 1937 Act County Employees Retirement Act and integrated with Social Security. In addition to ordinary retirement benefits, the plan provides disability and death benefits. Retirement contributions are made by both the County and the employee. The County has reciprocity with the State of California, contracting PERS agencies, and all County 1937 Act Retirement Systems.

Paid Holiday Leave: 12 set days and 1 personal holiday

Vacation Accrual:
2 weeks per year (0-3 years of service)
3 weeks per year (3-7 years of service)
4 weeks per year (7-11 years of service)
5 weeks per year (11+ years of service)
Limit of 300 hours.

Sick Leave Accrual:
12 days per year with unlimited accumulation.

Group Term Life Insurance and AD&D: $10,000; Provided by Standard Insurance Company.

Long Term Disability Insurance:
A Long Term Disability plan is available through the Tulare County Deputy Sheriff's Association.

Deferred Compensation:
A voluntary deferred compensation plan is available.

Uniform Allowance: $700 per year.

Career Development Pay: Plan available for qualified employees.
