The Job

The County's Regional Parks Department strives to offer recreational opportunities for the enrichment of county residents and visitors while protecting the county's natural, cultural, historical and land resources. We are currently recruiting for Regional Parks Operations Chief, who will plan, organize, and manage the day-to-day operations of the nine regional parks.

Duties may include:
  • Supervising and evaluating the work of a large and diverse staff through subordinate supervisors
  • Planning, assigning, directing, reviewing and evaluating the work of subordinates
  • Establishing operational procedures for all parks, working with field staff to discuss matters pertaining to the operation, maintenance and personnel of park sites and facilities
  • Establishing rules, regulations, and procedures to ensure maximum safety to the public when utilizing park facilities
  • Contract management including monitoring compliance, performance, budget analysis and tracking
  • Vendor relations, procurement, and prevailing wage requirements
  • Coordinating capital projects including design, planning, and construction
  • Special events coordination
  • Training staff to offer outstanding customer service

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Regional Parks Department manages and maintains nine (9) Regional Parks throughout San Bernardino County totaling approximately 8,000 acres with one (1) Preserve and one (1) Regional Trail. Each park offers diverse outdoor recreation opportunities in settings that range from metro, mountain and desert scenery. Among the activities that can be found in our Regional Parks are: lakes for fishing, sheltered group picnic facilities accommodating up to 350 people, swim complexes with water slides, zero depth water play parks, and playgrounds. Seven (7) of our Regional Parks offer scenic camping, from tent to large RV's, dry to full hook-ups. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Pre-Employment Process: Prior to appointment, applicants must undergo a background check, which includes fingerprinting and a medical exam.

Availability: Employees are on-call as necessary and will be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays.

Physical: This position may require frequent lifting and carrying of items weighing up to 50 pounds as well as frequent walking, standing, kneeling, stooping, and climbing.

Travel: Travel throughout the county is required. At the time of hire, a valid California Class C driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance is required and must be maintained throughout employment.

Minimum Requirements

Candidates must meet an Education requirement AND the Experience requirement to qualify.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT OPTION 1: Completed bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. OPTION 2: Completed Certified Park and Recreational (CPRP) Certification, at the time of appointment. Note: Candidates must provide proof of education with their application.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT
Four (4) years of full-time management experience in a construction, retail, parks, project management or customer service related industry, such as recreational environment, logistics/operations, or hospitality which includes direct, in-person contact with the general public AND three (3) years of full-scope supervisory experience . This experience may be concurrent, and must be clearly described in your work history.

SUBSTITUTION OPTION:
Completed associate's degree and an additional two (2) years of experience may substitute for the required education.

Desired Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess extensive management and operations experience. They will be a self-motivated individual with outstanding communication skills and a positive attitude towards public service work. In addition, the ideal candidate will possess: Experience managing in a recreational environment such as a park or outdoor recreation setting, outdoor service provider, camp or resort.Experience in developing and implementing policies and procedures.Experience with budgets, project, and contract management.Supervisory experience in maintenance, construction, irrigation, or landscape.Experience working with volunteers, diversified teams, and/or vendors and concessionaires.Ability to provide leadership to various teams with honesty, integrity, and respect.Knowledge of hazardous materials policies and procedures.
