About the Position:

University Advancement builds and strengthens relationships with the communities we serve to encourage advocacy, investment and support of the University, its mission, goals, and programs to achieve student and alumni success. Strategic Communications and Brand Management plays an integral role in helping to shape and strengthen the institutions brand and advance in a wide range of institutional effectiveness. We seek an exceptional individual to join our team as the Assistant Editorial Director (Administrator I). The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude, an active, energetic mind, and a leadership style that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

Under the direction of the Editorial Director, the Assistant Editorial Director is tasked with developing content for various platforms, especially internal communications, marketing deliverables, websites, university initiatives, and the university homepage and news site. This position demonstrates a firm grasp of news, feature, promotional, persuasive and fundraising copywriting. The assistant director works under the direction of the editorial director and is part of the editorial development team.

A vital element of this position includes adapting to various writing projects to support integrated marketing and communication plans that promote strategic programs and initiatives. Must understand how to develop content with clear linkages to the university’s current brand positioning themes and collaborate with the marketing, public relations, design and digital media teams in planning appropriate editorial content for our print, web and marketing projects. Must be skilled in writing for the web as well as print and be able to apply Search Engine Optimization (SEO) best practices to increase the reach and engagement of the university’s content. The assistant director must be detail-oriented, highly motivated, and can simultaneously manage multiple projects and deadlines.

This position is a member of the leadership team and also works with the editorial director on the university’s signature publications, including Titan magazine, Titan Report and the Annual Report, as well as serves as the backup for the director. Other duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in an applicable field. Minimum of three-five years of professional writing and editing experience. Mastery of news, feature, promotional/persuasive, fund-development, and issues-based writing. Superior spelling, grammatical, editing, and proofreading skills. Ability to establish appropriate context, tone, and texture in writing assignments to best connect intended audiences and fulfill communication objectives. Ability to uphold and communicate established university editorial standards. Ability to manage several concurrent work projects, determine priorities, and meet deadlines. Proficiency in using personal computers, printers, and office equipment. Proficiency in using a variety of administrative, project-management, online/collaborative, MS Office, and other relevant software applications.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to complete the background check satisfactorily may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in an applicable field.

License/Certifications

A Valid California Driver’s License.
