About the Position:

The Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Planning leads systematic and integrated efforts to examine the effectiveness of university programs, curricula, services and operations; provides meaningful data to support strategic planning and decision-making at all levels of the university; plays a critical role in demonstrating accountability to accreditation, external entities and the general public; fosters a campus-wide culture of data-informed decision-making, continuous improvement, and teaching and learning innovations. We seek an exceptional individual to join our team as the Senior Data Analyst (Associate, Academic and Institutional Studies II -Range A). The Senior Data Analyst performs a wide range of high-level research projects and data analytics in alignment with university priorities and strategic plan and contributes to building a culture of inquiry and data-informed decision making. Under minimal supervision, the Senior Data Analyst takes initiatives to conduct actionable research, innovate data analytics practices, tools, and technology, and performs data visualization or other data “storytelling” projects in the areas of institutional effectiveness, student success, enrollment management, quality assurance, and strategic decision-making. The Senior Data Analyst works both independently and in collaboration with staff at Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Planning on conducting analytical studies utilizing innovative and sound methodological design, and leads or contributes in the following areas: research design, data collection and cleaning, database creation, data analysis, analytical interpretation, and disseminating findings (via oral or written means) to university partners to facilitate decision-making and institutional effectiveness, all with very general direction or oversight by the Director of Institutional Research. The Senior Data Analyst responds, investigates, analyzes, and reports on data inquiries from university constituencies, completes external surveys and ad hoc requests, develops and maintains dashboards, and collaborates with team members to innovate analytics practices at the university. Other duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university with four years of progressively responsible technical or professional analytical experience which demonstrates ability to conduct substantive studies of problems and issues in assigned areas. Demonstrates thorough knowledge of the techniques and treatment of data such as simple correlation methods, trend analysis, frequency distribution analysis, sampling techniques, hypothesis testing and methods of interval estimation. Demonstrates ability to reason logically and capacity for independent and creative thinking on research problems. Demonstrates skills in project management, research planning and design, data collection, analysis, report preparation and graphic presentation of results. Experience using qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, design, and techniques. Experience using statistical software (SAS, SPSS, etc.). Experience developing, organizing and maintaining relational database and/or data warehouse systems, preferably in a university environment. Computer skills including spreadsheets, word processing, and integrated database applications. Demonstrates ability to manage multiple tasks in a collaborative and transparent manner. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Sensitivity to issues of diversity in a university community. Ability to work well in a diverse, collegial and consultative team environment. Detail oriented and ability to prioritize and organize work to meet deadlines, and functions effectively in a high-pressure, outcome-driven environment, with minimal supervision. Ability to use judgment, discretion, and decision-making skills in dealing with confidential and sensitive issues.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to complete the background check satisfactorily may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree (MA, MS, MBA, MPA, Ed.D., Ph.D.) in the social sciences or another discipline from an accredited college or university that includes a heavy emphasis on statistical analysis, research methodology, information system, decision science, data mining, and computer applications. A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in research, evaluation, and data analysis in a higher education environment, preferably within a comprehensive university setting. Experience in use of web-based interfaces for data transfer. Ability to write SPSS syntax to produce analyses, or experience analyzing multiple large complex datasets, SQL, and Peoplesoft. Experience conducting mixed-method research (quantitative and qualitative) and distributing research findings at professional conferences. Experience developing Tableau Dashboards (or similar data visualization tools). Experience working with finance and budget data, Human Resource or workload data, and Peoplesoft database and applications. Mastery in use of Microsoft Office suite including the ability to import data/tables from other sources. Experience with the development, modification, and maintenance of websites. Experience in survey design and analysis. Proven teamwork skills in a fast-paced environment. Professional experience at a California State University campus.

License/Certifications

A Valid California Driver’s License.
