Job Description

Minimum Qualifications
Education and/or Equivalent Experience:
  • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in a field related to the job.
  • Experience may substitute for education up to a maximum of four (4) years.


Licenses or Certifications:
  • Valid Driver’s License.

The position will be part of the Forensic Science Department’s Latent Print Section.

  • Receives, evaluates, and maintains custody of latent fingerprints.
  • Utilizes various comparison techniques
  • Conducts computer database searches
  • Utilizes methods and equipment for the enhancement of latent print evidence
  • Writes, drafts, and completes reports and provides documentation of analysis
  • Assists other law enforcement agencies in comparative analysis
  • Provides information to investigative units on the status of latent print evidence
  • Testifies in court as an expert witness


Driving Requirement:

This position requires a valid Driver’s License or the ability to acquire one by your hire date. External New Hires must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation ( DRE ) requisite. To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.

Must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems ( CJIS ) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, the following will result in being disqualified for this position: Felony Convictions, Felony Deferred Adjudication, Class A & B Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication, Class B Misdemeanor Convictions, an Open Arrest for Any Criminal Offense (Felony or Misdemeanor), and Family Violence Convictions. Preferred Experience:
  • Experience conducting latent print comparisons in an accredited forensic testing laboratory.
  • Experience conducting latent print inquiries with the use of an Automated Fingerprint Identification System (local, state or federal) in an accredited forensic testing laboratory.
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.


1. Receives, evaluates, and maintains custody of latent fingerprints.
2. Utilizes various comparison techniques
3. Conducts computer database searches
4. Utilizes methods and equipment for the enhancement of latent print evidence
5. Writes, drafts, and completes supplemental reports and provides documentation of analysis
6. Updates and modifies information in the databases
7. Transports evidence and/or property to storage location and/or criminal court
8. Assists other law enforcement agencies in comparative analysis
9. Provides information to investigative units on the status of latent print evidence
10. Testifies as an expert witness
