    DESCRIPTION

    The Long Beach Fire Department is accepting applications for a non-career Ambulance Operator Non-Career. An Ambulance Operator Non-Career provides basic medical care and transport of the ill and injured as an Emergency Medical Technician. Non-Career employees are allowed a maximum of 1600 work hours available over a 12-month period, and are considered temporary, at-will employees who are not typically eligible for benefits. However, non-career employees may qualify for health coverage and sick leave accruals subject to applicable federal and state provisions.
    THE FIRE DEPARTMENT
    The mission of the Fire Department is “to protect lives, property and the environment, improving the quality of life and safety of the community.” The Department’s core services are focused on maintaining a Citywide presence to effectively respond to fire, medical, beach, and waterway emergencies. The Fire Department provides effective prevention, education, and preparedness services to the community and has four bureaus: Operations, Fire Prevention, Support Services, and Administration. The Fire Department has over 650 employees with a Fiscal Year 2024 budget of over $166 million. The Fire Department’s core values are pride, respect, family, commitment, trust, and teamwork.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    • Under general supervision, provides basic medical care and transport to the ill and injured within the scope of an Emergency Medical Technician;
    • Transports patients to hospitals and other emergency care facilities;
    • Responds to emergency medical calls for service including fires, accidents, and other emergencies;
    • Operates an emergency vehicle to and from the scene of an emergency;
    • Assists paramedics and other emergency medical personnel in providing emergency medical and health care;
    • Monitors communications equipment to maintain contact with dispatchers and other fire personnel;
    • Assists receiving facility to obtain and record patients vital statistics and circumstances of emergency;
    • Prepares electronic patient care reports for billing and other record keeping purposes;
    • Operates within Federal, State, County, and City laws, regulations, and guidelines including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA);
    • Participates in training, public education, and station/equipment maintenance;
    • Performs other related duties as required.


    REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

    A valid California Emergency Medical Technician Certificate*A valid Health Care Provider CPR card, or equivalent*A valid California Ambulance Driver DMV Certification*A valid California Motor Vehicle License.Must be 18 years of age or older and High School graduate or equivalent. *Proof of valid documents required at time that your application is submitted.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
    • Skill to safely and effectively operate an emergency vehicle;
    • Ability to handle a high volume of emergency calls with tact and good judgment;
    • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects, including moving and transporting patients;
    • Willingness to work any shift assignment including weekends, holidays, overtime, and 12-hour or 24-hour shifts.
    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
    • Experience working for a government agency;
    • Bilingual in Spanish, Khmer, and/or Tagalog
    • Completion of FEMA’s National Institute of Management Systems ICS 100 and/or ICS/IS 700.


    SELECTION PROCEDURE
