Who We Are The Internal Services Department (ISD) plays a major role in supporting all County of Los Angeles departments and commissions. With an annual budget of over $873 million and 2,183 budgeted positions along with over 5,120 contracted workers of varying professions in facilities management, information technology, environmental, administrative, purchasing and contracting, ISD is the County's trusted partner and provider of choice.

The Opportunity

We are pursuing an experienced and qualified candidate to fill a Sign Painter position in the Maintenance and Operation Division, Support I Section. This candidate must possess strong working knowledge of graphic design software and applications, plotters, and other computerized graphic design equipment to produce signs, banners, stencils, patterns, decals, acrylic cut-outs and other customized signage.

Essential Job Functions

Position Responsibilities

Designs, paints, and lays signs and posters using graphic design software and plotters.

Creates all types and styles of lettering by hand or graphic design software including shaded lettering and the use of gold, silver and aluminum leaf.

Prepares all types of surfaces for sign painting including wood, metal, glass, concrete, acrylics and stucco.

Matches colors and mixes paints and other materials used.

Cuts stencils and uses them in the reproduction of signs.

Fabricates signs by cutting letters and symbols out of reflective material or precut letters and placing self-adhesive sheeting onto aluminum blanks and laminating the completed signs.

Estimates the amount of materials required, and maintains work records including computerized work measurement and accounting systems.

Performs work in a shop or in the field.

Drives automotive equipment to and from work sites.

Works from swinging stage or ladders to paint signs on sides of buildings.

Supervises subordinate workers and vendors involved in sign making and other painting duties.

Requirements to Qualify:
Successful completion of a recognized sign painting apprenticeship program* of at least five years' duration -OR- Six years' sign painting experience including the preparation of surfaces, design, layout, gold or silver leaf lettering, which includes utilizing computerized graphic design software and equipment, one year of which must have been at the journey-level**.

A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions.

Successful applicants for positions that require driving must obtain and present a copy of his/her driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before final appointment. Applicants should not present a copy of their driving history until asked to do so by the hiring department. The County will make an individualized assessment of whether an applicant's driving history has a direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job. License must not be currently suspended, restricted, or revoked.

Physical Expectations:
3 - Moderate: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

Vision: Keen color perception.

First meet our requirements. After that, we will invite you to a structured Oral Interview assessing Knowledge and Skills in the field, Knowledge of Computer Design Software and associated Equi pment, Interpersonal Skills, Oral Communication and Customer Service Skills weighted at 100%

Applicants will be processed on an-received basis and promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

You must achieve a score of 70% or higher on the assessment in order to be placed on the Eligible Register.

Eligibility Information:

The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the examination will be placed on the Eligible Register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation. PASSING THIS EXAMINATION AND BEING PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE REGISTER LIST DO NOT GUARANTEE AN OFFER OF EMPLOYMENT.

Special Information:
SHIFT - ANY - Appointees may be required to work any shift including nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, and on-call.
