Who We Are The Internal Services Department (ISD) plays a major role in supporting all County of Los Angeles departments and commissions. With an annual budget of over $873 million and 2,183 budgeted positions along with over 5,120 contracted workers of varying professions in facilities management, information technology, environmental, administrative, purchasing and contracting, ISD is the County's trusted partner and provider of choice.

The Opportunity

We are pursuing a qualified candidate to fill the Carpenter Working Supervisor position in the Facilities Management Division, Special Services Section. This candidate must possess strong leadership skills to a team as a working supervisor; this class is responsible for assigning, supervising, and inspecting the work of carpenters, apprentices, and helpers performing various types of carpentry work. This includes planning carpentry projects, coordinating activities, laying out jobs and estimates of labor and material requirements , setting-up and breaking down various types of events and other labor related duties for the County of Los Angeles determining work methods and types of materials to be used, and performing the work of a journey-level carpenter. This position requires incumbent to exercise considerable knowledge of the practices, tools, terminology, and accident prevention precautions of the trade and the ability to work from plans and specifications, and to follow rough sketches and oral instructions of customers and managers.

Essential Job Functions
Position Responsibilities

Assigns, supervises and inspects the work of carpenters, apprentices and helpers in new construction, alteration, repair and County-Wide event set-up.

Plans carpentry projects and coordinates activities with other crafts and operating units.

Lays out jobs and estimates labor and material requirements.

Determines work methods and types of materials to be used.

Orders and maintains a stock of materials and supplies.

Ensures that code requirements and safety regulations and safe work practices are observed.

Supervises the maintenance of tools and equipment.

Creates and maintains work records and reports manually and by utilizing a personal computer and associated software and applications.

Performs the work of a journeyman carpenter.

Drives automotive equipment to work sites.

Requirements to Qualify:

Two years' of verifiable journey-level* Carpenter experience in all phases of carpentry work** which includes interior and exterior finish work; foundation form and framing work. Qualifying experience must be in commercial or residential carpentry .

License: A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

Physical Class IV - Arduous: Involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working on irregular surfaces; and occasionally requires extraordinary physical activity.

Special Requirement Information:

* Journey-level experience is defined as possessing the required knowledge, skills, and training to perform a full-range and diversity of work independently and reliably. Positions at this level operate with fairly significant freedom from day-to-day supervision and need little or no guidance on such matters as selecting appropriate problem solving methods and techniques, locating appropriate regulations, or applying proper procedures to carry out work.

** Carpentry work is defined as possessing a wide-range of carpentry skills which includes the ability to complete work as a framer and finisher. Also, the ability to create props and customized work orders for special carpentry projects.

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills; and ability to work well with all levels of staff.
  • Supervisory experience which includes coaching and mentoring staff on performance.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

First meet our requirements. After that, our process includes an Oral Interview assessment covering Knowledge and Experience , Computer Skills, Problem-Solving, Leadership Ability, Customer Service, Interpersonal Skills, and Oral Communication weighted at 100%.

Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination to be added onto the eligible register list of eligible candidates.

Eligibility Information

The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the assessment will be placed on the Eligible Register List in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation. Passing this examination and being placed on the Eligible Register List do not guarantee an offer of employment.

Applications will be processed on an as-received basis and promulgated to the list of eligible register candidates accordingly.

Vacancy Information: The resulting eligible register list for this examination will be used to fill a vacancy in the Facilities Management Division, Special Services Section of the Internal Services Department.
