Public Safety Officer

Essential Functions
CITY OF HENDERSON, KENTUCKY CLASSIFICATION SPECIFICATION CLASSIFICATION TITLE: PUBLIC SAFETY OFFICER PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION A Public Safety Officer will be responsible for performing non-hazardous and non-emergency calls for service, assisting Police Officers with routine duties such as directing traffic, assisting citizens and monitoring parking lots for parking violators.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Issuance of citations for violation of any motor vehicle or traffic safety ordinance enacted by the city.
- Investigate and report vehicle collisions.
- Assist in emergency areas and at disaster scenes.
- Provide citizens with needed information to receive needed assistance.
- Issuance of citations to motor vehicles illegally parked in designated fire lanes pursuant to law.
- Control and direction of traffic on public thoroughfares.
- Removal of vehicles in violation of state or local law consistent with those laws.
- Takes precautions to safeguard an accident scene to prevent further incidents; Warns oncoming motorists of existing hazards and diverts traffic as necessary; Surveys accident scenes to decide best course of action in handling the scene and investigating the cause of the accident; Evaluates facts of accident to decide if enforcement action should be taken; Visually examines and inspects accident scenes for physical evidence to determine cause of accident; Interviews motorists and witnesses at accident scene to determine cause of accident; Prepares and completes concise, accurate accident reports; Directs traffic using hand signals to advise motorists what to do and maintains a safe and orderly flow; Performs traffic controls at construction sites or other special events such as parades and sports activities; Handles crowd control at parades, street fairs, sports events, and other special events. Parking violations and citizen assistance; Assist Police Officers with routine duties; Testify in court as needed; Maintain regular and predictable in-person attendance during regular business hours of the City of Henderson is required. Must undergo and successfully complete drug test and alcohol screening prior to employment and undergo and successfully complete future drug test and/or alcohol screening pursuant to the City's Drug and Alcohol policy.

Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED; Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Must be a U.S. Citizen. Must successfully complete 120 hours of appropriate training certified by the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council prior to being appointed as a Public Safety Officer.
Performance Aptitudes
Data Utilization: Requires the ability to calculate and/or tabulate data. Includes performing subsequent actions in relation to these computational operations. Human Interaction: Requires the ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others regarding the application of procedures and standards to specific situations. Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate and control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools and/or materials requiring complex and rapid adjustments. Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information. Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives. Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in critical and/or unexpected situations involving moderate risk to the organization.
ADA Compliance
Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds). Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, taste, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally. Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, smoke, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, chemicals, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances.
