Training Instructor

This position serves as a Training Instructor for the In-Service and/or Recruit Officer Training Program, Training Services Bureau (TSB), United States Capitol Police (USCP), in subjects such as security screening, defensive tactics, use of force, basic investigative techniques, and related law enforcement topics. This position is in the TSB which is located at the USCP Training Academy in Cheltenham, Maryland. This position may also require alternate duty stations located in Washington, D.C. The incumbent will be responsible for assisting with developing, presenting and evaluating law enforcement training courses for the Department and Bureau; preparing course outlines and daily lesson plans that are consistent with overall course objectives; providing instruction on topics within a specialized subject matter field from approved course materials and instructional plans that are consistent with overall course objectives and departmental policy. Training Instructors rate and score students'/officers/ and officials (who participate in the training programs) and make the initial determination whether they qualify or fail to qualify to meet department standards. They analyze the results and exercise independent judgement and discretion in making recommendations to management on training policies and other personnel actions.

Researches and analyzes relevant case law for course presentations and evaluate and revises course contents as necessary. Determines and outlines coverage, specific goals, techniques, instructional aids and timing for each phase of each lesson. Deviates from daily lesson plans as necessary to adjust to changes in law enforcement procedures, equipment and techniques. Evaluates and advises on students' progress by observing performance of students and by developing and administering tests on materials studied. Stays abreast of literature and other materials in assigned training areas, evaluates the potential of new materials and instructional aides and participates in training workshops, seminars, and courses. May be required to perform such administrative support training duties as class scheduling and coordination, record keeping and property management.
