The South Dakota Department of Corrections is hiring.Maintains custody of men at the Rapid City Minimum Center by enforcing institutional operations memoranda and procedures to ensure the safety and security of the inmates and employees and that confinement conditions are maintained.ResponsibilitiesPerform duties at assigned post (control room, cell hall, visit room, recreational area)Observe inmates in cell halls, recreation areas, dining halls, school, health services, and shower roomsSupervise inmates by assigning duties and monitoring workPrepare reports of incidents and rule infractionsConduct inmate counts and maintain log booksEscort and transport inmates to and from appointments inside and outside the facilityInspect and search cells, common areas, inmates, and visitorsMonitor and control gates and cell doorsRespond to crisis situationsMaintain 12‑hour shifts (6 a.m. – 6 p.m. or 6 p.m. – 6 a.m.) and work every other weekend and some holidaysFunctionsMonitor and control access to facility and restricted areasManning an armed post (requires annual firearms certification)Monitor facility perimeterMaintain controlled movement schedule for offendersEscort and Dakota Department of Corrections Basic Training, including English reading comprehension, competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics and firearms/armed transport curriculumPossess the physical ability to successfully complete Defensive Tactics:Lift arms above head and kick as high as own waistStabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take downUse arms, palms of hands, and feet to deliver blowsWithstand impact on own body from strikes/blowsRotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tacticGet down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitionsWill be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and while on assignmentMust be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety and securitySeize, hold, control or subdue violent or assaultive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injuryDemonstrate body agility, strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistentlyMust be able to work 12 hour rotating shifts to include holidays and weekendsWork in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control of another person and/or restraint situationsDeal with individuals with a range of moods and behaviors, utilizing tactfulness and congenial mannerWork with people of the opposite sex, diverse Administrative Regulations, policy, standards and guidelinesVisually observe and audibly hear in order to identify changes, inappropriate activity, hazards or potential security breaches and verbally communicate pertinent informationVisually observe and monitor inmate whereabouts and maintain an accurate count in assigned areasVerbally communicate clearly and willingness to do so respectfullyPerform intermediate computer keyboarding skills and communicate via computer based emailStudy information and recount events in a written, comprehensive, legible methodIncorporate the South Dakota DOC Mission statement while completing daily job dutiesWillingness and ability to respectfully communicate with offender families and the publicEffectively communicate and work with offenders through daily monitoring in a variety of situationsControl, direct and instruct offenders individually and in groupsWillingness to respectfully work with a diverse populationRemain alert and
