Corrections Officer – State of MichiganThe Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) seeks entry‑level Corrections Officers and Corrections Medical Officers to oversee the custody, security, and treatment of prisoners in correctional facilities throughout the state.ResponsibilitiesMaintain security and order in assigned correctional facilities.Surveil and patrol units, enforce regulations, and respond to incidents.Assist with the treatment, rehabilitation, and safe handling of inmates.Participate in training, evaluations, and certification requirements.Adhere to all department policies, procedures, and ethical standards.Training & CertificationAll new hires must complete the DOC Officer Recruit Training Program, consisting of an 8‑week academy and 2 months of on‑the‑job training. Successful completion of the initial training, annual training, and continuing certification is required to remain employed.Qualifications & RequirementsMinimum educational requirement: 15 semester (23 term) college credits in any field.Military Veterans: Joint Services Transcripts (JST) accepted; call 517‑335‑1863 or 517‑241‑8559 for assistance.Experience: 8 years in a Corrections Officer or 8 years in a Corrections Medical Officer role; or two years of full‑time corrections experience in another jurisdiction and currently employed satisfactorily.Alternate education waiver: Employees with fewer than 15 semester credits may use a 24‑month education waiver. Completion of educational and experience requirements is mandatory for reclassification to E9.Must be at least 18 years old and pass a post‑job‑offer medical exam, drug screen, and physical fitness test.Must have an active driver's license or valid Michigan identification number.Must complete a background investigation; felony convictions may result in ineligibility based on Public Act 191 of 2017.Physical Fitness StandardsAll applicants must meet the Department's physical fitness standards.
