    Position Description

    POSITION DESCRIPTION

    Come and join the City of Fresno in achieving our mission of Building a Better Fresno!

    Traffic Maintenance Worker I is the entry level class in the Traffic Maintenance Worker series. Under supervision, performs a wide variety of skilled traffic safety maintenance tasks, including installation, maintenance, and removal of traffic control signs and markings on City streets for effective traffic control. Fabricates, assembles, installs, maintains and removes traffic control signs and markings. Installs and maintains proper signing for construction and maintenance zones. Places traffic control markings through the application of paints, plastics, and reflective markers. Operates and maintains equipment required to accomplish the work in traffic control maintenance operations.

    This class is in a flexibly-staff series, which requires one year of satisfactory service before an employee can promote to the journey (Traffic Maintenance Worker II) level. Employees in classes that require one year of service for flexing, will not serve an additional probationary period at the journey level. Traffic Maintenance Worker I incumbents are expected to progress to the Traffic Maintenance Worker II ($4,603-$5,596/mo.) level with appropriate training, experience, and satisfactory job performance.

    Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

    Assists in the fabrication, assembly, installation and maintenance of traffic control signs

    and markings.

    Installs and maintains proper signing for construction and maintenance zones.

    Places traffic control markings through the application of paints, plastics, and reflective

    markers.

    Operates and maintains equipment required to accomplish the work in traffic control

    maintenance operations.

    Assists in the removal of traffic control markings by the processes of grinding,

    sandblasting, or hydroblasting.

    Performs related duties as required.

    Vacancies currently exists in the Department of Public Works, Street Maintenance Division. Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of three (3) months from the date the eligible list is created, with the option of extending that period at the City's discretion. If the examination process is suspended for this recruitment, the eligible list may be limited to three (3) months.

    THE REQUIREMENTS

    Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline in order to qualify for the examination and does not assure a place on the eligibility list.

    Possession of High School Diploma or equivalent GED completion.

    One (1) year of paid work experience in the installation and maintenance of traffic control signs and markings.

    OR

    One (1) year of paid work experience in road construction maintenance that utilized traffic control measures.

    Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of application and continued maintenance throughout the entire term of employment in the classification.

    Special Requirement(s):

    Within ninety (90) days of appointment, incumbents must obtain a valid Commercial Learner’s Permit for a Commercial Class B Driver’s License without air brake restriction.

    Incumbents will be required to obtain a valid Commercial California Class B Driver License without air brake restriction within twelve (12) months of appointment and maintain the license for the entire term of employment in this class.

    Certification in Work Zone Traffic Safety required within six (6) months of appointment and continued maintenance throughout the entire term of employment in the classification.

    Additional Information

    This position is designated as being Safety Sensitive and requires all eligibles offered employment to successfully pass a drug test prior to employment. Federal law requires that applicants for positions involving the operation of certain transit vehicles, revenue services vehicles, the transportation of hazardous materials or heavy equipment over 26,001 pounds requiring a commercial driver's license, must undergo pre-employment drug testing as a condition of employment and be subject to random alcohol and drug testing throughout their employment in this position.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that are necessary to safely, effectively, and efficiently perform the essential functions of this job with or without reasonable accommodation.

    This classification’s physical demands involve heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally with assistance, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently with assistance, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical demands may be required: balancing, climbing, crouching, feeling, manual dexterity, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, walking.

    THE SELECTION PROCESS

    The selection process may consist of the following:

    Written Examination: 100%: A job related written examination may be administered which may test a candidate's knowledge of the signs used to control traffic; placement of traffic control signs, street and curb painting techniques and procedures, lane closure, work zones in streets, a candidate's ability to work safely as a part of a crew, and other job related knowledge. Candidates must achieve a passing score to qualify for the eligible list.

    The written exam is tentatively scheduled for the week of July 20, 2026.

    HEALTH REIMBURSEMENT ARRANGEMENT (HRA)

    Eligible retirees can use the remaining Sick Leave balance, in excess of 240 hours, at 80% of hourly rate and other qualified leave balances, tax free, to reimburse health insurance premiums and other qualified medical expenses.

    RETIREMENT - City of Fresno Retirement Systems, one of the best funded public systems in the state. Reciprocity with other public California systems. Vested in Retirement benefits after 5 years of service. City employees do not participate in Social Security.

    DROP (Deferred Retirement Option Program): an optional, voluntary program that allows an employee to deposit retirement benefits in a special savings account within the Retirement System while continuing to work for the City of Fresno for up to 10 years. Participation minimum is age 50 and vested. Benefits include ownership of accumulated funds, compound interest earnings, and alternative distribution options.
