Transportation dispatchers coordinate the movements of means of transport like trucks that are entering terminals. A transport dispatcher contacts drivers and communicates with them through computers, phones or in person. They assign loads to the drivers and make sure that they leave and arrive according to schedule. Dispatchers are available to answer any questions from the drivers and help troubleshoot problems that arise.
Duties and Responsibilities (Include but are not limited to):
Position Requirements - Transportation dispatchers need to have at least a high school degree or its equivalent. Most dispatchers begin their career as drivers, where they not only learn about rules related to driving but also about the company's operations. Usually the company also provides on-the-job training. Dispatchers need to be adaptable to lengthy and strenuous working hours; dispatchers generally work a 50-hour week, and spend long periods sitting at their desk.
Annual Salary: 60K-70K
