This is a semi-skilled position in vehicular traffic control for electric and water systems. An incumbent is responsible for the calculation and placement of traffic control devices and barricades in accordance with "Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices: (MUTCD) standards and regulations. The employee is responsible for the safety of the public and the utility workers within the traffic control zone. Work is reviewed by a supervisor during progress and upon completion to ensure performance meets established standards.
Essential functions include flagging at electric and water utility work sites in all types of weather, controlling the direction of traffic control patterns and placing signs and barricades in compliance with MUTCD, maintaining tools, signs, and related equipment in serviceable condition, operating traffic control trucks, generators, and trailer-mounted arrow boards, performing vehicle inspection daily, participating in and/or facilitating training to support departmental or City initiatives and requirements, working overtime or alternate hours as necessary for the efficient operation of the department, and position is designated as Mission Critical.
Additional functions include performing other job duties, including, but not limited to, cleaning and reading water meters, performing general labor, painting fire hydrants, and servicing backflow preventers.
Qualifications include a high school diploma from an accredited school or a GED, being 18 years of age by the date of hire, possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license, possessing and maintaining a valid telephone number, and obtaining traffic control certification within six months of employment.
Knowledge includes hand tools, portable generators, and related equipment, and the occupational hazards associated with this type of work. Abilities include communicating on City radio, maintaining harmonious relationships with other employees and the public, reading and using maps and City directions, operating various equipment associated with the work, and working with minimal direct supervision.
Working environment/physical requirements include climbing up/downstairs, bending, walking/standing for prolonged periods, twisting, and exerting up to 100 pounds of force regularly. Exposure to risks includes working hours both day/night, wet, humid, hot/cold, bright/dim light, traffic, heights, dust, and pollen. Requires normal visual acuity, field vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception.
