    City Administrator

    The City of Blue Ridge is accepting applications for the position of City Administrator. The city's population is 1,253 and attracts a large number of tourists to its downtown area year-round. The budget is $24,020,834 including all funds and capital projects. The city provides all services from police to public works including Water and Sewer Plants and infrastructure. This position is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the city government and implementing and enforcing the policies adopted by the Mayor/City Council. The city charter provides for the delegation of the mayor's authority to this position.

    Minimum qualifications: Bachelor's degree in public administration, business administration or related field from an accredited four-year college or university; five (5) years of progressively responsible management experience in public/local government management; equivalent combination of education and experience.

    The following examples are illustrative of the duties assigned to this position. No attempt is made to be exhaustive in this listing.

    • Exercise supervision over all executive and administrative work of the city and provide for the coordination of administrative activities.
    • Appoint and remove, or cause, with confirmation of appointment or removal by the council, all officers, department heads, and employees of the city, except as otherwise provided in the Charter.
    • Prepare and submit to the mayor/council a recommended annual operating budget and recommended capital budget in accordance with city ordinances.
    • Supervise and oversee all special projects for all City departments and provide updates to the mayor/city council.
    • Oversee and authorize all purchasing activities in accordance with city policy.
    • Recommend to the mayor/city council such measures relative to the affairs of the city, improvement of the government, and promotion of the welfare of its inhabitants.
    • Coordinates the preparation of the monthly agenda package for city council meetings.
    • Establish such policies as may be necessary for the efficient and effective administration of the affairs of the city.
    • Responds to citizen complaints.
    • Attend all meetings of the city council with a right to take part in the discussions, but having no vote.
    • Make a written report to the council each month of the activities of the city government for the preceding month and keep the mayor/city council at all times fully advised as to the financial condition and needs of the city.
