  • Summary

    Security Officer

    Ensures a safe environment for our patients, staff, and visitors. Patrols hospital property, responds to calls for assistance, and reports on conditions, objects, or persons which may impact the security and/or safety of patients, associates, physicians, visitors, or vendors and responds according to established policies, procedures, and regulations. Security Officers are essential associates in a 24/7 environment and may be required to be flexible with scheduling and work "off-shifts." Must obtain and maintain State of Maryland and/or District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department armed Special Police Officer Commission to carry out duties associated with crime control and response.

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities

    • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
    • Immediately responds to emergencies to provide necessary assistance to employees and customers.
    • Conducts designated security patrols throughout the facility as directed. May be required to patrol the hospital campus/grounds via security motor vehicle or bicycle.
    • Monitors security and appearance of lobbies, waiting areas, elevators, and entrances.
    • Prepares and submits reports and logs of all incidents, investigations, and activities. Maintains department records, reports, and files as required.
    • Proficient in and utilizes nonviolent crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques to ensure staff, patients, visitors, and all others remain safe, calm, and respected while onsite.
    • Provides assistance for way-finding, parking, deliveries, and other requested information for the hospital and MedStar affiliates.
    • Responds to security and medical code calls. Investigates incidents and accidents. Gathers information and evidence. Notifies appropriate authorities or superiors and calls for back-up assistance as necessary.
    • Testifies at legal proceedings, hearings, and trials.
    • Works cross-functionally to ensure safe and secure environments.
    • Conducts foot security patrols of hospital buildings and grounds as required. Observes and monitors conditions, objects, or persons which might require police action. Controls access to and inspects packages of those leaving buildings. Reports all safety, security, and law violations.
    • Collects and secures patient valuables and lost-and-found articles.
    • Monitors camera surveillance system, access control, and intrusion detection system as directed.
    • Responds to circumstances where the exercise of law enforcement authority may be required.
    • Interacts with visitors and maintains designated security posts throughout the facility as directed.
    • Ensures quality outcomes for the security department by communicating with security staff and the public.
    • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts. Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.

    Minimal Qualifications

    Education

    • High School Diploma or GED required
    • Associate's degree preferred

    Experience

    • 5-7 years of related security or law enforcement experience required
    • Prior armed security and/or law enforcement experience preferred

    Licenses and Certifications

    • DL - Valid State Driver's License in good standing required
    • MD Special Police Commission - MDSPC required
    • Must satisfy ongoing training requirements to maintain SPO commission in Maryland and/or DC.
    • Must have 40 hours of initial firearms certification training from a certified police instructor authorized in the appropriate geographic region.
    • Must complete in-service training requirement of qualifying with weapon twice a year.
    • Must successfully complete all MedStar initial training related to violence prevention, de-escalation, and crisis prevention intervention.
    • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required
    • Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.
    • IAHSS - Certification As A Security Officer (Basic or Advanced) preferred

    Knowledge Skills and Abilities

    • Verbal and written communication skills
    • Strong interpersonal skills
    • Ability to remain calm and thoughtful during a crisis
    • Ability to assist in de-escalating situations with strong emotions and conflict
    • Basic computer skills preferred

    This position has a hiring range of USD $23.65 - USD $42.03 /Hr.
