    Days, Full-time

    Hybrid - Ability to work from home, with the need to also be on-site in Des Moines, IA

    The Deputy General Counsel is a member of the Chief Legal Officer's senior leadership team, participating in strategic planning for the Law Department and leading the Deputy General Counsel's assigned Practice Group. This leadership role requires a deep understanding of various legal disciplines and must be familiar with the areas of law that most impact the Practice Group. The Deputy General Counsel will collaborate closely with the Chief Legal Officer to provide sound legal advice, implement best practices, and mitigate risks while maintaining the highest ethical standards. Additionally, this position will act as a trusted advisor to senior management and cross-functional departments, ensuring that strategic legal advice aligns with business objectives. With responsibilities ranging from managing legal teams to handling high‑stakes matters, this role demands exceptional analytical skills, strategic thinking, and the ability to adeptly navigate complex legal landscapes.

    Responsibilities
    Leadership & Management
    • Serve as a member of the Chief Legal Officer's senior leadership team, participating in strategic planning for the Law Department and assigned Practice Group.
    • Establish standard performance requirements and development goals for team members. Identify and assign work activities to meet both UnityPoint Health and Law Department needs.
    • Develop and implement processes to identify topics that require legal involvement and empower business leaders to act independently when appropriate.
    • Create tools, templates, and processes that effectively and efficiently provide legal services by the assigned Practice Group, including developing appropriate self-help resources that ensure an exceptional experience.
    • Manage the use of outside counsel for the Practice Group, including identifying appropriate specialists, ensuring external counsel has the necessary information to serve the organization effectively, manage the Practice Group's workload, and setting business leaders up to successfully work directly with outside counsel when appropriate.
    • Establish and lead regular meetings with key stakeholders and clients, including the most senior leaders served by the Practice Group.
    • Lead assigned Practice Group by defining and managing strategic and operational initiatives, optimizing workflows for efficiency.
    • Assist in developing and implementing the Law Department's goals, objectives, policies, and priorities, ensuring these are achieved effectively.
    Strategic Legal Advisor
    • Become well‑acquainted with the business and operations served by the assigned Practice Group, including its leadership, decision‑making structure, strategy, and business priorities.
    • Provide and oversee legal services to the business served by the Practice Group, including but not limited to:
      • Identifying, assessing, and managing legal risks that could impact UPH, anticipating the effect on operations;
      • Negotiation, drafting, and management of contracts and other legal documents, ensuring they protect the company's interests; and
      • Managing legal disputes.
    • Identify and mitigate the areas of highest legal risk impacting the assigned Practice Group.
    • Act as the strategic advisor to the business on a wide range of state and federal laws, regulations, and standards relevant to UnityPoint Health.
    Qualifications
    Education
    • Juris Doctor degree from a fully accredited American Bar Association law school.
    Experience
    • 7 years experience in healthcare law with proven expertise in practice management.
    • 7 years experience as in‑house corporate counsel.
    • 2 years leading a dynamic legal team within a matrixed environment, preferred.
    Licenses/Certifications
    • State Bar Examination.
    • Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination.
    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
    • Methods and techniques of case management, prioritization, and control.
    • Plan, organize, integrate and manage legal activities.
    • Proficient with Microsoft products.
    • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of team members, leaders, and board members.
