    The Position
    The Port of Portland Fire Department is hiring a Fire Prevention & Training Assistant

    Being a Fire Prevention & Training Assistant at the Port means helping keep Portland International Airport (PDX) safe through fire prevention, life safety education, and training support. This role offers hands-on experience in public safety, inspections, and emergency preparedness while providing opportunities to build skills and grow within the fire service.

    As a Fire Prevention & Training Assistant, you will support the daily implementation of the department's prevention and training programs. Responsibilities include conducting inspections and maintenance of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and fire extinguishers, assisting with fire and life safety inspections, and facilitating CPR and fire extinguisher training. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to build experience in public safety, emergency preparedness, and fire service operations.

    Essential Job Duties

    • Maintain a variety of fire inspections records, check sheets, mapping, testing, and construction documents as it relates to the Port of Portland Fire Prevention and Inspections Office
    • Conducts Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and fire extinguisher inspections and oversee both programs
    • Maintain detailed inspection records, schedules and status updates
    • Assist the Training Officer by developing lesson plans and conducting both formal classroom and practical drills covering all phases of Fire Department operations
    • Prepare, organize and maintain detailed training records as well as data entry for all departmental training
    Minimum Qualifications
    • High school diploma or equivalent; or an equivalent combination of education and/or relevant experience (required).
    • Degree, certificate, or current enrollment in a Fire Science program or closely related field (required)
    • Valid state driver's license and ability to maintain driving privileges (required).
    • Ability to pass and maintain a Criminal History Records Check and Security Threat Assessment required for a PDX Security Badge (required).
    • Ability to successfully complete all pre-employment screenings, including a background investigation, psychological evaluation, drug test, and medical exam (required).
    • BLS CPR/First Aid Instructor certification (preferred).

    • Promote safety as a guiding principle and a regular practice in accomplishing work
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with shift supervisors and officers while maintaining the chain of command
    • Learn and maintain current knowledge of PDX Emergency Response Operations
    • Work effectively with other Port departments, tenants and airlines while enforcing fire code and fire prevention education
    • Effectively plan, coordinate, and facilitate training between other Fire Departments and colleges
    • Drive Fire Department support equipment to emergencies as required
    • Work outdoors in inclement weather and lift 50 pounds
