    Description
    Responsible for ensuring the safe crossing of school-age children at assigned school crosswalks within school speed zones. Guards are assigned posts at elementary schools, junior high schools, and some high schools. Guards perform their work in split shifts and work shifts range from 1 hour to 6.5 hours per day depending on schools assigned. Each shift is 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after students' arrival and departure times.

    Duties

    • This position requires a dependable incumbent that can work split shift.
    • Actively participate in job-specific training, including the Florida School Crossing Guard Training Program (FDOT), and attending annual mandatory training and requalification every 14 months.
    • Monitor school crossing areas for students who wish to cross and allow them to cross appropriately and safely.
    • Provide school children with safety crossing instructions and crossing procedures.
    • Guards utilize safety equipment including a retro reflective vest, stop paddle, and traffic whistle to provide gaps in traffic to allow for the safe crossing of children.
    • Monitor student behavior.
    • Report traffic violations to supervisor or other law enforcement member, which threatens the safety of children crossing the road.
    • Be on time for scheduled school zone posts.
    • Be in possession of all assigned safety gear and clothing.
    • Processes applicable incoming and outgoing documents and/or files in a timely manner consistent with supervisory direction and/or agency policies/procedures.
    • Assists co-workers when the need arises and learns new tasks by working as a team.
    • Report hazards to safety to the Guard supervisor and/or 911 operator.
    • Check for safety hazards on equipment. Additionally, reports identified or potential maintenance, safety, and/or non-compliance findings, hazards, and incidents to the appropriate personnel and/or department.
    • Adheres to leave and attendance policies, including punctual arrival and completing shifts. Notify supervisor or dispatch if they are unable to attend post one (1) hour prior to the post start time, and timely submits timesheet, and leave requests.
    • Makes assigned chain of command aware of anything noteworthy.
    • Responds to supervision, guidance, direction, and feedback from executive staff and superiors in a receptive manner and in accordance with agency policies.
    • Conducts themselves in a polite, helpful, courteous, ethical, and professional manner, abiding by the established code of ethics, and demonstrates a courteous and professional image when engaged in any activity with the public.
    • Cultivates positive working relationships with colleagues and other agency units to enhance work area output and services in line with agency policies.
    • Demonstrates an understanding, consideration, and respect of cultural, religious, and gender differences when interacting with the public and coworkers.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
    Qualifications and Requirements
    Minimum Education, Experience and Requirements:
    • High school diploma or its equivalent.
    • Must be in good physical condition including sight, sound and mobility.
    • Must pass an extensive background investigation including polygraph and drug test.
    • Good communication skills: read, speak, and understand the English language.
    • Internal candidates must have successfully completed their probationary period
    • Internal candidates with punitive disciplinary action within 365 days are ineligible
    • Internal candidates must have completed applicable CCSO FTEP requirements
    • The following items (or authorized equivalents) may be required at various steps in the application process:
      1. Driver's License
      2. Birth Certificate
      3. Social Security Card
      4. Form DD214 for all periods served in the military
      5. GED or High School Diploma and Sealed Transcripts from the highest level of education
      6. FDLE Authority for Release (notarized)
