Deputies are a direct representation of their Sheriff and held to the highest standards, on and off the job. Deputies are called upon to respond to calls of service to aid citizens in their time of need, whether that is taking a simple report of a stolen wallet, or a response to the most heinous of crimes. Deputies will serve the rural area of Stephens County to include Bray, Doyle, Alma, Empire, Central, Meridian, Corum, and Loco. While jurisdiction is the entirety of the county, deputies will focus patrol on rural areas. Deputies should have a positive attitude towards police work and be self-motivated and proactive in nature. Deputies will complete a thorough field training program as well as obtain certification from the Council of Law Enforcement Education and Training (CLEET) after recruitment.Skills RequiredExtraordinary people skillsDetail orientedSelf-motivatedEducationMust have a High School Diploma or GED EquivalentOther RequirementsAfter recruitmentComplete Field Training ProgramMust be able to pass background checkNo felony convictionsNo convictions of crimes of moral turpitudeNo domestic violence convictionsNo active protective orders or prior protective order violationsMust be able to obtain certification from CLEETOn the job training and instruction will prepare applicants for this certificationMust be age 21 or aboveDivisionsDeputies can be assigned to several different divisions within the department. In addition to that, patrol deputies will be watching for traffic violations and conducting traffic stops throughout these areas.ReservesReserve deputies are individuals who typically hold full-time jobs elsewhere, but volunteer some of their down time to the sheriff's office. Reserve deputies are called out when major incidents occur to help with the processing of crime scenes, or simply to supplement patrol while others work the incident. They also come out to events around the county, such as fairs and festivals, along with patrol to saturate the event with law enforcement presence. Reserve deputies are unique, in that they can simply plug into any one of the many divisions at the sheriff's office and assist as needed. Our reserves are a critical part of our infrastructure, and they are deeply appreciated.School Resource Officer (SRO)Deputies assigned to our school resource officer division will be assigned to and contracted to a school district in the county. Deputies will assume the responsibility of providing tactical security for the school and provide insights to school administrators on how to improve school security. Deputies will receive additional training specific to this assignment to improve their understanding of their role at the school and to execute the performance of that role in the most effective way possible.Courthouse SecurityThe courthouse is monitored and protected by the Stephens County Sheriff's Office Courthouse Security Division, where deputies are stationed at the front doors of the courthouse and perform routine metal detection of incoming visitors and property x-rays of visitor's belongings. Deputies assigned to this division will learn to examine x-ray imagery and be able to identify potential threats to the security of the courthouse. Deputies will also assist detention center staff in escorting prisoners to and from courtrooms for court proceedings. Above all else, deputies remain vigilant and watchful of their surroundings and addressing any threats they might identify.TransportThe transportation division is a vital part of the department as it relates to bringing offenders to justice. Offenders that commit crimes in Stephens County may not stay very long and instead flee to other areas or simply get apprehended outside of our jurisdiction. For that reason, a dedicated team of deputies are required to safely and securely transport prisoners from outside agencies back to Stephens County to be brought before the proper magistrate. Deputies on this assignment, when not actively transporting, are utilized by the Courthouse Security Division to assist in their ongoing duties.InvestigationsOur investigative team is comprised of highly skilled and observant deputies. Deputies interested in piecing together major crimes, cold cases, or complex cases are assigned to the investigative division. Their work will often be brought to trial, and Investigators will have to testify to their methodologies and how they came to their conclusions on these cases.K-9 HandlerPatrol Deputies that are interested may apply to become K-9 handlers within the department.
