    Firefighter

    Under general supervision, providing emergency response, basic fire prevention, rescue, fire suppression, and a variety of other assigned duties as directed. Work involves inspecting care seats. Employee's work involves risk and hazardous exposure. Employee is required mandatory shift work.

    Performs job safely and in accordance with the Town and Fire Department safety procedures and guidelines.

    Performs full range of fire suppression, fire prevention, and lifesaving duties; assists with wide-range of rescue duties including but not limited to high angle, trench, and confines space rescue; and assists in performing rescues from hazardous sites such as motor vehicle accidents and collapsed buildings.

    Performs basic life support medical care as certifies; provides immediate emergency care to ill or injured persons; assesses condition of patient; and administers emergency measures.

    Assists other agencies and Fire Department in driving and operating a variety of emergency and non-emergency apparatus and equipment.

    Remains available for non-schedules duty with or without notice in order to safely control an emergency situation; and remains available to be recalled for duty in the event of a hurricane threat, flood, or any other natural disaster, large scale fire or hazardous materials release, or any situation where management deems necessary.

    Conducts pre-fire planning surveys in existing structures within jurisdiction.

    Participates in wide variety of training sessions including but not limited to fire suppression, technical rescue, basic fire prevention, hazardous materials operation, disaster preparedness, and medical training; conducts training sessions for other firefighters and the general public; and speaks to students and other groups regarding fire service operations.

    Performs a wide variety of general housekeeping including but not limited to cooking, cleaning, janitorial, and maintenance duties as required.

    Performs routine clerical and administrative functions (such as preparing reports and training materials using related software).

    Performs child safety seat checks and installations.

    Receives and/or reviews a variety of records and reports (such a standard operating guidelines, firefighting training manuals, memorandums, radio protocol, and fire prevention events.).

    Prepares and/or processes a variety of documentation such as fire call report, child safety seat form, smoke detector form, truck check-off sheets, and training reports.

    Refers to standard operating guidelines, fire training manuals, equipment operating manuals, child safety seat recall list, first responder manual, policy and procedure manuals, codes/laws/regulations, publications and reference texts, etc.

    Operates a variety of equipment and machinery (such as rescue equipment, self-contained breathing apparatus, fire vehicles, firefighter and first aid equipment, fire safety mobile trailer, computer, etc.).

    Uses a variety of tools (such as fire apparatus, air pack, extraction tools, thermal imaging camera, automatic external defibrillator, etc.); a variety of supplies (such as cleaning supplies, brushes, oils, transmission fluid, antifreeze, fire suppression supplies, protection supplies, general office supplies, etc.); and a variety of computer software (such as Fire House, Internet, etc.).

    Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals (such as Captain, Department Officers, coworkers, other department heads and staff, and the general public).

    Answers telephone.

    Prepares for visitors for the Fire Department.

    Prepares for parades, displays, and other events throughout the Town.

    Participates in charitable collection for non-profit organizations (such as Carolina Children Charity, DREAM, Sculpture in the South, etc.).

    Performs salvage operations (such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, and removing debris).

    Performs other related duties as required.

    Requires IFSAC or Pro Board Firefighter II certified. Current CPR and EMR certification required (EMT Basic preferred). Must possess a valid South Carolina driver's license.

    Knowledge of the methods, policies, and procedures of the Fire Department as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Firefighter.

    Knowledge of the various fire safety and fire prevention codes and ordinances related to the activities of the department.

    Knowledge of all other laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position.

    Knowledge in the areas of fire science, hazardous materials response and handling, rescue operations, emergency medical response procedures, hydraulics, electrical, mechanics, pre-fire planning, construction/engineering, etc.

    Knowledge of how to determine and ensure safety on firegrounds.

    Knowledge of the hand signals and fire terminology used on the fireground.

    Knowledge of how to utilize various pieces of firefighting equipment and tools in a safe and efficient manner.

    Knowledge of bloodborne/airborne pathogens and infection control; and knowledge of risk management and safety procedures.

    Knowledge of the various Town streets, neighborhoods, landmarks and hydrant locations.

    Knowledge of how to prepare media campaigns representing the department.

    Knowledge of how to maintain an effective and positive relationship with general public, subordinates, supervisors, and other Town personnel.

    Knowledge of how to communicate effectively, tactfully, and persuasively with members of the public in difficult situations which may arise.

    Ability to offer training and assistance to co-workers and employees of other departments as required.

    Ability to read and interpret various materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job.

    Ability to prepare reports and records with accuracy and in a timely manner.

    Ability to use independent judgment in critical and/or high-risk situations.

    Ability to perform duties while under high stress levels in emergency situations.

    Ability to work varying hours for extended periods of time.

    Ability to perform duties under adverse environmental conditions (such as no/low vision due to smoke, hazardous atmospheres which require the use of breathing apparatus, working in confined spaces or at heights, extreme heat from fire, and hot/cold outdoor temperatures, odors, toxic agents, wetness, noise, humidity and disease).

    Ability to plan daily activities and complete tasks within assigned time frames.

    Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including a fire engine, vehicles, firefighting equipment, medical equipment, computer, basic office equipment, telephone/radio, etc. Must be able to exert up to twenty pounds of force occasionally and lift or carry weights of up to 200 pounds. Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work; must be able to remain on feet for periods of time, withstand uncomfortable and/or dangerous physical conditions at fire scenes, and perform manual tasks. Must be able to pass annual Department physical examinations.
