This position is responsible for completing training in the enforcement of state and local laws. Reports to the Police Sergeant, who assigns work in terms of general instructions. We offer a VA approved Apprenticeship Program for military veterans who are eligible to receive funding from their Post 9/11 GI Bill, and facilitate the training and education to receive those benefits from the VA. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results. Guidelines: Guidelines include local, state, and federal laws; City ordinances; City administrative and personnel policies; Police Department General Orders; department policy memoranda; Police Department Rules of Conduct and Duty; and North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application. Complexity: The work consists of related law enforcement duties. Potentially life-threatening situations contribute to the complexity of the position. Scope and effect: The purpose of this position is to complete law enforcement training by assisting in the enforcement of local, state, and federal laws. Success in this position contributes to the enforcement of local, state, and federal laws and to the effectiveness of department operations. Personal contacts: Contacts are typically with other City staff; court officials; representatives of other law enforcement agencies; crime victims; suspects, prisoners, and inmates; and members of the general public. Purpose of contacts: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, provide services, and motivate and influence persons. Physical demands: The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, running, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity. Work environment: The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors. The employee may be exposed to potentially life-threatening situations.
