Leak Detection Technician
Software Guidance & Assistance, Inc., (SGA), is searching for a Leak Detection Technician for a full time assignment with one of our premier utility clients in San Jose, CA.
Responsibilities:
- Support the execution and ongoing refinement of field-based water loss identification initiatives across the distribution system
- Conduct acoustic surveys, correlation work, and related investigative activities to identify system and customer-side water loss
- Coordinate with engineering, distribution operations, customers, and external partners to schedule and complete survey efforts
- Provide responsive leak locating support to minimize excavation scope and reduce service disruption during main breaks
- Assist with internal knowledge sharing by demonstrating and instructing staff on the use of leak detection tools and equipment
- Maintain accurate records including maps, drawings, survey results, and system observations
- Gather and document asset condition information to support asset management and corrective planning efforts
- Prepare routine summaries and status updates related to leak detection activities and assigned projects
- Participate in evening or overnight survey work as operational needs require
- Attend specialized training related to leak detection technologies and methodologies
- Review construction documentation and as-built records to support field verification efforts
- Ensure tools, vehicles, and work areas are maintained in a safe, clean, and operational condition in accordance with safety standards
- Respond to emergency call-outs tied to distribution operations and leak response on an as-needed basis
- Assist with dam inspection activities and field efforts related to system transient analysis
- Perform additional field or operational duties as assigned to support distribution system reliability
Required Skills:
- Hands-on experience using hand tools and water system leak detection equipment
- Foundational understanding of water distribution leak identification principles
- Ability to perform physically demanding outdoor work, including lifting, climbing, and extended field activity
- Strong communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with customers and internal teams
- Capacity to learn and apply new technologies, tools, and field methodologies
- Demonstrated judgment, initiative, and attention to detail in field environments
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in water main and service repair
- Valid California driver's license with an acceptable driving record
- Active California Grade D1 Water Distribution Operator certification
Preferred Skills:
- Familiarity with local service areas and distribution system layouts
- Experience supporting asset management or infrastructure condition assessments
- Prior involvement in emergency response or on-call distribution operations
- Experience documenting field findings and preparing operational reports
- Exposure to dam safety inspections or transient analysis support activities
- Willingness to work flexible schedules, including nights and emergency response situations
