    Job OverviewJob Type: ClassifiedJob Classification: 4000 - Corrections Officer ISalary Grade: L1Pay Range:Starting: $26.18 Per HourThe Corrections Officer I performs corrections work ensuring the welfare of adult inmates, court or direct remanded juvenile inmates, departmental and superior court staff, and maintaining security control and custody in a functional unit of a direct supervision jail. This is distinguished from the Deputy Sheriff classification, which is certified to exercise law enforcement powers.In a direct supervision jail, corrections staff controls behavior of the jail population through a proactive concept based on direct inmate supervision. Inmates are given the responsibility to influence their treatment and privileges through control of their own behavior. This approach differs from traditional reactive containment using bars, security glass, and other barriers.Essential FunctionsMaintain security of assigned facility by observing and controlling inmate behaviors, enforcing discipline, and reporting observations;Inspect living conditions within housing units for compliance with sanitation objectives;Conduct checks of inmate housing and cell searches for inmate census and detection of contraband;Control, operate, and inspect life safety equipment, electronic safety and surveillance equipment, and door control systems;Perform booking, fingerprinting, identification and records maintenance procedures;Review all incident numbers, log major rule violations, and print major charge sheets;Review all officer incident reports, evidence, and major charge sheets to ensure violations are clearly identified, follow protocols, and verify reports are completed correctly;Conduct inmate hearings within a timely manner.Work ScheduleThis division operates 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. All positions require inmate contact, rotating shifts including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, and an assigned post that may be rotated or reassigned at management's discretion.Minimum QualificationsApplicants must hold a high school diploma or GED certificate and be at least 18 years of age. Valid driver license required at time of application. CPR certification (American Red Cross or equivalent) required prior to completion of initial training. Knowledge and experience in corrections, security operations, and use of firearms and protective equipment are required.Licenses and CertificationsValid driver license required at time of appointment. Current first aid and CPR certification required. Certification to wear and maintain respirators and protective masks, and department-approved firearms and defensive weapons as required by the appointing authority. Maintenance of required licensure and certification is mandatory and may be grounds for termination.Physical/Sensory Work RequirementsConstantly uses fine motor skills to operate firearms and other equipment. Constantly required to speak and listen, observe details at close range and at a distance, operate a motor vehicle safely, walk/run varying distances, carry and lift objects up to 100 pounds, push/pull up to 100 pounds. Frequently exposed to severe weather, loud noises from firearms training, sirens, dangerous traffic conditions, and obstacles.Working ConditionsFrequently exposed to severe weather conditions, loud noises from firearms training, sirens, and other similar situations. Often required to work in areas presenting obstacles, dangerous traffic conditions.
