    Police Officer

    The University of California Police Officers deliver police services to the University and local community. Officers patrol on foot, bicycle and in vehicles; respond to crimes; investigate complaints; arrest offenders; appear in court; respond to medical, fires and other emergencies; control traffic; provide law enforcement and security at major events or assemblies; engage in crime prevention; participate in community liaison meetings; safeguard the custody and disposal of found property and evidence.

    Required Qualifications:

    • High School Diploma or equivalent certification.
    • Completed the Law Enforcement Academy.
    • Knowledge of State and Federal laws, rules, and regulations as applicable to the police.
    • Competent in defensive tactics and arrest and control techniques.
    • Shows sound judgment and the ability to process information quickly and thoroughly, while making effective and ethical decisions that are trustworthy and in keeping with the highest standards of conduct.
    • Skilled in the operation of a motor vehicle under emergency and other police-related driving conditions.
    • Skill and knowledge in the use and care of all firearms, impact weapons, chemical agents, restraint devices, ECDs, and other safety equipment issued by the Police Department.
    • Ability and experience in using computers, including Microsoft Office applications, and law enforcement databases.
    • Ability and experience serving and working well with the public as a solo officer as well as an effective member of a team.
    • Accurate report writing skills including the proper use of grammar, punctuation, and spelling, as well as the cohesive organization of facts and information.
    • Experience communicating in various forums: one-on-one, in groups, in stressful situations, in writing, as well as the ability to communicate using a police radio while keeping transmissions brief and clear.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Currently employed as a police officer for at least 2 years.
    • An Associate's or Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
    • Prior law enforcement experience with the University of California or higher education setting.

    Special Conditions of Employment:

    • Must be at least 21 years of age at time of hire.
    • Work at any time day or night and in periods of disaster and civil disorder.
    • Must be U.S. citizen or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship.
    • Must pass background investigation to ensure applicant is of good moral character and free of any physical, emotional, or mental conditions that might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer.
    • Must pass comprehensive medical and psychological pre-placement examinations as established by the University, state and federal law for Police Officers.
    • Must possess a current California POST Basic Certificate issued by the Commission on Peace Officers' Standards and Training OR possess a POST Academy Certificate, OR be currently enrolled in a CA POST law enforcement academy with an anticipated graduation within the next six (6) months.
    • Those awarded a POST Basic Certificate and have a three-year or longer break in service must have a current certificate through a POST requalification course.
    • Work a varied schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays; work 8-, 10- or 12-hour shifts, work an alternative schedule; work assigned overtime. Also, in periods of disaster and civil disorder.
    • Work outside in all weather conditions.
    • Must have vision of 20/100 correctable to 20/30, with normal color vision.
    • Body weight must be proportional to height.
    • Must wear uniform and equipment including but not limited to: utility belt, hand gun, ammunition, baton, flashlight, and handcuffs and wear Kevlar vest at all times.
    • Perform duties while sitting, standing, walking or running intermittently throughout shift; climb fences, stairs, barricades, ladders or traverse uneven terrain; repeatedly kneel, bend, or stoop; intermittently push, pull, and use force to move objects; constantly reach, handle, or grasp various objects.
