Annual Salary/Hiring Range - $50,000 for applicants not certified as South Carolina Law Enforcement Officer (LEO). Salary for certified S.C. LEOs based on years of certification.
Job Purpose - Reporting to the Police Sergeant, the Campus Police Officer protects students, faculty, staff and visitors, property, and facilities and enforces the laws and regulations of the City of Rock Hill, State of South Carolina and Winthrop University on University, adjacent and other appropriate properties.
Required Qualifications - High school diploma; certification as a Law Enforcement Officer by the South Carolina Justice Academy or willingness to obtain and maintain; certification as a NCIC Full Function Operator by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division or willingness to obtain and maintain; and a valid driver's license required. Must reside in South Carolina or be willing to relocate to South Carolina. Must be at least 21 years of age.
Preferred Qualifications - Previous related law enforcement experience.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Summary - Working knowledge of the Rock Hill City Code, the laws of the state of South Carolina, and the rules and regulations of Winthrop University pertaining to campus security, including civil rights laws. Ability to investigate accidents, disturbances and violations and deal tactfully and effectively with students, faculty, staff and the general public. Effective interpersonal and communication skills. Must be able to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays; pass the state physical examination; qualify semi-annually with firearm; and successfully complete defensive driving requirements.
Job Summary - Patrols in WUPD vehicles or on foot to enforce City of Rock Hill and State of South Carolina laws and regulations and Winthrop University policies. Issues citations for moving and parking violations. Investigates complaints and disturbances using the appropriate techniques and makes arrests as necessary. Prepares various reports and forms, including incident, citation, accident and information reports, case files, tow sheets, and field interview cards. Performs building security inspections. Responds to requests for assistance. Monitors parking areas and crosswalks and reports maintenance needs. Controls traffic during fire drills and emergencies.
Travel/Overtime Requirements
Telecommuting - Employees are not eligible for telecommuting/remote work during their 12-month probationary period. After that time, certain positions may be eligible for telecommuting/remote work at the discretion of the supervisor and in accordance with Winthrop policies.
