    Police Officer

    The Bangor Police Department is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Police Officer. The Bangor Police Department is the only agency in the area that offers 3 days on, 3 days off patrol work schedule. No flipping from days to nights or vice versa, your assigned shift is set. Bangor Police also invest in their officers with 78 hours of high-quality annual training, to include multiple firearms trainings as well as active threat training throughout the year.

    The City of Bangor offers the Maine State Retirement 3C plan for Police Officers. Officers areeligible to retire at 66.67% (two-thirds) pay of their top highest three years. Overtime opportunities will allow for significantly increased earning potential. There is no age limit to withdraw and for every year you remain vested after 25, you add 2%. Applicants can also choose an ICMA 401(A) retirement plan as well.

    Our officers are assigned to the Bangor International Airport and work extra duty assignments at the Cross Insurance Center, Maine Savings Amphitheater concert venue, local sporting events, waterfront events and multiple city functions.     We are a completely self-sustained department and offer the following specialty teams for interested applicants:

    • Criminal Investigation Division

    • Special Response Team

    • K9 Handler (Patrol Canine and Explosive Detection Canine – Airport)

    • Bomb Squad

    • Crisis Negotiator Team

    • Community Services Division

    • Evidence Response Team

    • Special Enforcement Team

    • Urban Rifle Team

    • Drug Recognition Expert

    • Polygraph Examiner

    • Forensic Computer/Cellular Device Examiner

    • Crash Reconstructionist

    • Honor Guard

    • Field Training Officer

    • Tactical Medical Care

    • Forensic Mapping

    • Officer Peer Support Team

    • Interested officers can also be cross trained in emergency dispatcher duties

    Officers also achieve instructor certifications allowing them to conduct training both in the department and at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in subjects such as:

    • Firearms Instructor

    • Mechanics of Arrest, Restraint and Control and other law-enforcement-related defensive tactics programs

    • De-escalation Strategies

    • Emergency Vehicle Operation

    • Handgun/Shotgun/Rifle Armorer

    • Standard Field Sobriety Test/Intoxilyzer

    • TASER/less lethal munitions

    • Active Threat Response

    • Physical Fitness Testing

    • Rape Aggression Defense

    Qualifications

    Applicants are not required to have a degree but must be 21 years old to apply. If you are 20 years of age, you must have a minimum of 60 credit hours.

    The City of Bangor offers a competitive salary and comprehensive benefit package to include vacation, holidays, sick leave, health insurance, dental insurance, life insurance, Aflac supplemental insurance, employee assistance, uniforms and equipment. Pay ranges from $32.29 to $41.28 per hour with agreed upon pay increases in 2026 and longevity steps at 15 and 20 years coming to $42.30 and $43.38 per hour. Lateral transfer available. Percentage stipends offered for post-secondary education, military service and certain Department specialties and assignments. We also offer bonuses for passing bi-annual physical fitness tests.
