    Description

    Patrols an assigned area of the City in a patrol car, motorcycle, other vehicles, bicycle or on foot to control traffic, investigate citizen's complaints, initiate appropriate action upon viewing hazardous situations, prevent crime or disturbance of the peace, investigates, and assists at accident scenes, investigates crimes and arrest violators of statutes and ordinances.
    Examples of Duties

    1. Regularly patrols assigned patrol district while observing traffic for violations of traffic laws and ordinances, assisting stranded motorists, checking for wanted vehicles, and/or studying traffic patterns. Utilizes radar equipment and visual observation to determine violations, issue citations and make arrests.
    2. Regularly responds to a variety of citizen complaints such as burglaries, robberies, domestic quarrels, assaults, or other criminal complaints or calls for service. Assists complainants and, if necessary, initiates an investigation by interviewing victims, witnesses, suspects, as well as gathering evidence. Prepares a preliminary report on the details of the complaint in a clear, concise, and logical sequence establishing the elements of the crime investigated.
    3. Responds to accident scenes to render first aid to injured persons, route traffic around the accident scene, and investigate the cause of the accident. Prepares a report on the details of the accident. May have to assist with removal of debris from the crash scene.
    4. Responds to crimes in progress and intervenes when appropriate.
    5. Conducts proactive patrols including foot patrol, citizen contacts, and surveillance to monitor for illegal or suspicious activity.
    6. Makes arrests of individuals wanted on a warrant or based on probable cause. May have to use legal and reasonable force when dealing with violent, resistive, or combative individuals. Interacts with the public and business owners to build relationships, address issues, and represent the department and our core values.
    7. Follows up on preliminary investigation of complaints and assists in the investigation of major or complex complaints.
    8. Appears in court to testify on investigated cases, citations issued, or arrests made.
    9. Checks business establishments after normal hours to assure proper security.
    10. Assists in controlling large crowds and in quelling civil disturbances by directing traffic, guarding crowd boundaries, monitoring and observing crowd for illegal activity, preventing and/or intervening in fights, maintaining order, and removing and taking necessary legal action to protect all individuals present.
    11. Assists in the processing of new inmates by searching them, completing booking information, recording, and storing their personal effects, photographing, and fingerprinting. May provide prisoner meal and conduct cell checks.
    12. Inspects establishments or activities where a permit or licenses is necessary for operation. Initiates appropriate action if proper authority has not been granted or established standards are not being followed.
    13. Serves subpoenas, warrants, and other legal documents.
    14. May serve in temporary assignments such as, working in the Community Policing Unit, tactical team, traffic unit, crisis negotiators, special investigative assignments (i.e. WEMET, Detective Bureau) or performing other special projects as assigned by the Police Chief.
    15. Miscellaneous duties/responsibilities as required or assigned.
    OTHER DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
    1. All job functions are considered essential at this time.

    Typical Qualifications
    1. College degree required, minimum of an associate's degree or a combination of comparable number of college credit hours needed to
      obtain an associate's degree and relevant law enforcement experience.
    2. M.C.O.L.E.S. State Certification.
    3. Ability to make proper physical arrests of violent, resistive, or combative suspects, and use force when appropriate and necessary.
    4. Train and qualify in handgun and rifle use according to department specifications.
    5. Complete all training requirements to include use of force tools, tactics, and techniques, according to department specifications.
    6. Must demonstrate ability to prepare, write and/or dictate thorough investigation and follow up reports.
    7. Ability to view and operate a computer in a variety of conditions including in a vehicle, in bright conditions, in low light and dark conditions.
    8. Ability to use current computer technology and software to query for investigative purposes and complete data entry for reports.
    9. Must demonstrate ability to interact with persons in a positive manner.
    10. Ability and license to drive assigned police vehicles.
    11. Ability to deal with belligerent, verbally abusive, loud, and uncooperative individuals while remaining calm and professional.
