    Primary Function of Organizational Unit

    The primary purpose of the University Police Department is to protect the lives and property (real and personal) of all personnel and visitors who frequent the campus. This unit must enforce all applicable federal, state, and local laws, as well as, the university rules and regulations. In addition, this unit must patrol and secure the grounds of North Carolina Central University, by responding to calls and/or complaints perform preliminary investigations of criminal and conduct incidents, record and refer complaints, complete and file reports on all incidents.

    Primary Purpose of Position

    The primary purpose of this position is to protect the lives and property (real and personal) of all personnel and visitors who frequent the campus. This position effectively oversees, account for, and secure state property, maintain a safe environment, assist and notify the police department of upcoming events that would critically impact the North Carolina Central University Community and Police & Public Safety Department. This position reports to the Field Operations Commander.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    The successful candidate must possess a working knowledge of criminal and traffic laws to regularly enforce criminal and traffic violations; knowledge of investigative techniques and case preparation requirements for the more routine traffic and criminal cases; knowledge of the standard law enforcement equipment, its care, and safe use according to Department General Orders; knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Access) Applications; ability to perform community policing; ability to complete the Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Program and become certified by the State of North Carolina through the North Carolina Criminal Justice and Training; ability to work independently with little or no supervision; to take initiative to see projects and assignments through to completion; interpret and analyze information to make necessary decisions; to exercise judgment and discretion in problem solving; to plan, prioritize and organize workflow; ability to work flexible schedules; excellent analytical and organizational skills along with written and oral communication skills, excellent editing skills; great interpersonal skills to interact effectively and diplomatically with a wide range of individuals in a high pressure environment.

    Minimum Education/Experience

    Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED and 6 years experience as a sworn local, state or federal law enforcement officer. An advanced degree (JD, Masters, Doctorate) reduces the minimum experience requirement by 1 year. Current certification from NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer or certification eligible within an agency specified timeframe.

    Licenses or Certification required by Statute or Regulation

    Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission. (valid BLET certification) A person who has certification from another state or expired NC certification must satisfactorily complete BLET portions as required by NC Criminal Justice and Training Commissions as the first scheduled offering.
