    Law Enforcement Certified Police Officer

    Applications are now being accepted for Law Enforcement Certified Police Officer positions in the City of Fairfax Police Department. If you are currently D.C.J.S. Law Enforcement Certified, please provide proof of certification along with any other current certifications and training. Certified applicants will also be required to complete a 3 part/14-week Field Training program, which may be extended if needed. The written test will be waived for any current D.C.J.S. Certified Law Enforcement applicant.

    The hiring process may consist of the following: Application/Personal History Statement submission, Initial Interview, Panel Interview, Conditional Job Offer, Background Investigation, Polygraph Testing, Psychological Testing, Chief's Interview and a Job-Related Medical Examination / Stress Test, Final Approval / Job Offer.

    Performs general duty police work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances of the City and Commonwealth of Virginia. Patrols a designated area of the city to preserve law and order and to prevent and discover the commission of crime, to direct traffic, and to enforce motor vehicle laws. As directed, officers answer emergency calls and complaints involving suspicious and criminal activities, domestic disputes, and other related citizen requests for service. Maintains records and prepares reports. Performs all other duties as assigned.

    The duties listed above are intended only as an illustration of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.

    1) 20 years and 6 months of age at time of application, no upper age limit.

    2) High school graduate or valid G.E.D. certificate.

    3) Possession of a valid operator's license.

    4) Eyesight must meet minimum of 20/20 binocular vision. Corrective glasses may be worn. Uncorrected vision with glasses must be no worse than 20/100 in either eye. Corrective soft contact lenses may be worn. Uncorrected vision with soft contacts must be no worse than 20/200. Must demonstrate successful long-term wear of lenses of 6 months minimum for pre-employment examination.

    5) U.S. Citizenship required at time of application.

    6) No felony convictions or domestic assault convictions.

    7) Be of good character, reputation and integrity.

    8) Have a favorable credit record.

    9) Have the ability to speak clearly, hear, analyze and react swiftly to high stress situations dealing with citizens.

    10) Successful completion of the entire background investigation process.

    Only those applicants who have not applied within the past six months are invited to participate in the hiring process. Although individuals with minimum qualifications may apply, those with the highest levels of job-related experience, education, and qualifications will receive favorable consideration. Those applicants that have successfully completed the hiring process and are offered employment will be required to sign an employment agreement that includes a non-tobacco use clause. Additionally, all sworn police department employees must comply with departmental appearance standards to include grooming, body piercing, and tattoo policies.

    While employed with the Department, members shall not have any offensive tattoos or body art anywhere. Examples of offensive tattoos include but are not limited to racial, sexual, discriminatory, gang-related, or obscene language. Tattoos on the face, neck, head or hands are not permitted. Exceptions may be given at the discretion of the Chief of Police. If an exception is given or denied, it shall be detailed in the member file or applicant file. The Chief of Police reserves the right to require any tattoos be covered while on duty.

    Two-week rotation of permanent 12-hour shifts, including weekends and holidays. Hours: Permanent 12-hour shifts 7 a.m.-7p.m. or 7 p.m.-7a.m. Additional pay may be considered based on past experience, military service, ability to speak a foreign language (proficiency test required), and other job-related skills.
