    Description

    This position fabricates, installs and maintains City street signs and installs pavement markings; and performs related work as required. The incumbent works according to some procedures but decides how or when to do things; work is reviewed regularly by supervisor.

    The work is considered medium-to-heavy in nature and involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, digging, pushing or raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis. The work requires the following physical abilities to perform the essential job functions: crouching, grasping, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.

    Work environment may involve exposure to bright/dim light, dusts and pollen, adverse weather conditions, wetness and humidity, traffic, extreme noise levels, vibration, moving machinery, electrical shock; and is relatively safe, secure, and stable.
    Essential Job Functions

    • Fabricates, installs and maintains City street signs and other signs as required by City departments;
    • Uses computer-aided design and drafting computer software as appropriate to produce signage;
    • Creates and applies car decals to City car windows:
    • Measures and determines placement of pavement markings; operates paint equipment to apply traffic markings to pavement;
    • Removes graffiti on streets, sidewalks, bridges, etc.;
    • Assists in ensuring the safety of crew members at work sites; sets up safety devices and flags traffic as needed;
    • Provides instruction and leadership of lower-level crew members as assigned;
    • Maintains assigned vehicles, tools and equipment;
    • Maintains a neat, orderly and safe shop work environment;
    • Operates a fork lift, vehicles, shop equipment and various hand and power tools as necessary to complete daily tasks;
    • Provides instruction and leadership of crew members as assigned;
    • Attends meetings, workshops, training, etc., as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills; and
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.
    Qualifications

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:
    • High school diploma or GED;
    • Two (2) years of relevant prior experience;
    • Valid South Carolina Class "D" Driver's License.
    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Knowledge of addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, and/or calculating ratios, rates and percentages;
    • Ability to copy, transcribe, enter or post data or information;
    • Ability to speak or signal to people to convey or exchange information of a general nature;
    • Ability to handle or use machines, tools or equipment requiring moderate instruction and experience, such as computer-aided design and drafting software; may repair power tools and light equipment and office machines;
    • Ability to perform semi-skilled work involving set procedures and rules but with frequent problems;
    • Ability to read routine sentences, instructions, regulations, procedures or work orders; writing routine sentences and completing routine job forms and incident reports; speaking routine sentences using proper grammar;
    • Ability to perform clerical, manual or technical tasks prescribed by standard practices but which may require computation, the use of several procedures, and the use of independent judgments with obvious choices; requires normal attention for accurate results; and
    • Ability to guide others, requiring frequent decisions affecting co-workers and others who depend on the service or product; works in a somewhat fluid environment with rules and procedures but with many variations from the routine.
