    Firefighter - Advanced Life Support (ALS)

    The Lynchburg Fire Department is looking for experienced Firefighters- Advanced Life Support (ALS). Firefighter (ALS) - $54,517 (Emergency Medical Technician - Intermediate or Paramedic - VAOEMS or National Registry) Minimum Certifications and Courses for Employment: All uniformed employees of the Lynchburg Fire Department shall complete a 22-week paid recruit academy and in their initial employment period the following minimum certifications:

    • Virginia Department of Fire Programs Firefighter I
    • Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations
    • Emergency Vehicle Operations Course - Class III
    • Mayday! Firefighter Down
    • Virginia Department of Health – Office of Emergency Medical Services Emergency Medical Technician – Basic
    • Federal Emergency Management Agency – National Incident Management System ICS 100, 200, 700, 800
    • Other mandatory classes taught in Recruit School are:
    • Virginia Statewide Traffic Incident Management Committee Virginia Traffic Incident Management, Rescue Task Force Rapid Response Training
    • Virginia Department of Fire Programs Introduction to Technical Rescue Module I
    • Vehicle Rescue Level I
    • National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

    Essential Duties

    Other duties to provide direct or indirect service to the citizens may be assigned.

    • Responds to alarms, drives and operates apparatus and related equipment, assists in the suppression of fires, including entry, advancing lines, rescue, ventilation, salvage work, and extrication;
    • Responds to emergency medical calls, drives equipment, and administers pre-hospital basic and/or advanced life support care (if certified); stabilizes and transports patients to emergency care facilities;
    • Extricates victims from automobile wrecks, collapsed structures, etc.;
    • Performs salvage and overhaul services, establishes temporary utility services;
    • Responds to non-emergency calls and conducts other non-emergency service calls as necessary;
    • Prepares reports and maintains records of fire apparatus and medic unit responses, prepares routine incident, run-log, and maintenance records;
    • Participates in continuing training and instructional programs through individual study of technical material and attendance at scheduled drills and classes in emergency medical treatment and fire suppression practices;
    • Transports patients on a non-emergency basis between home and/or treatment facilities;
    • Assists in maintaining and repairing fire and emergency medical equipment and cleaning fire stations and grounds.

    ADDITIONAL DUTIES Other duties to provide direct or indirect service to the citizens may be assigned. When unusual situations occur and/or the City Manager declares a State of Emergency, all City employees may be required to accept special assignments and perform as needed to ensure appropriate service delivery.

    Minimum Education and Experience Required

    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Graduation from high school or GED. General knowledge of principles of anatomy, physiology and chemistry in relation to the respiratory and circulatory systems; general knowledge of the principles and techniques of emergency care, including proper treatment, and automobile extrication and patient transportation; general knowledge of all emergency care equipment; general knowledge of the street system and physical layout of the City of Lynchburg; general knowledge of elementary physics, chemistry and mechanics; general knowledge of technical fire fighting principles and techniques, and principles of hydraulics as applied to fire suppression.

    Additional Requirements

    Possession of valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia and acceptable driving record according to City criteria; Valid Commonwealth of Virginia certification as:

    • Emergency Medical Technician/Basic
    • Firefighter I and II.
    • "Mayday" Firefighter Down
    • Satisfactory completion of Haz-Mat Awareness courses.

    The department may require the employee to obtain and maintain Advance Life Support certification, up to and including Paramedic certification. Must successfully complete IS100 and IS700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training within 90 days of employment. May also be required to complete higher levels of NIMS training as determined appropriate for the position.
