    Duties

    Help

    • You will perform structural firefighting duties at a large industrial facility,station, or installation where the structures, equipment, and operations present complex and hazardous firefighting situations.
    • You will work as a member of a crew whose primary purpose is to control and extinguish fires, rescue individuals endangered by fire, reduces or eliminate potentialfire hazards, preforms confined space, above and below grade and high angle rescue.
    • You will respond as a member of a Hazardous Materials response team for the purpose of containment, control and mitigation of spill or release and provide emergency medical services.
    • You will control and extinguish fires by operating a hose, ladder, hydrant and/or rescuing endangered people.
    • You will operate pumps, foam generators, boom nozzles, and other related equipment.
    • You will perform as an Emergency Medical technician, respond to medical emergencies, analyze the situation, initiating a variety of emergency medical procedures or pre-established protocols.
    • You will administer emergency medical care performing Basic Life Support tasks.
    • You will communicate with medical facilities providing information regarding victim's conditions, vital signs, temperature, etc.
    • You will assist in the operation of firefighting vehicles, such as pumpers and aerial ladder trucks.

    Qualifications

    GS-04: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-03 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Proficient in operating both basic and specialized firefighting tools, such as ladders, rescue tools, and nozzles; understanding fire control principles and firefighting strategies, including handling hazardous environments; respond to hazardous material releases, ensuring protection of people, property, and the environment; applying procedures for maintaining and inspecting firefighting vehicles and equipment; and utilizing effective search and rescue techniques.

    The following certification levels are the minimum qualification standard for the position. Individuals must be certified at these levels before being eligible to fill the grade and/or position.
    • Firefighter I and II
    • Hazmat Awareness
    • Hazmat Operations
    GS-05: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: The following certification levels are the minimum qualification standard for the position. Individuals must be certified at these levels before being eligible to fill the grade and/or position. Operating both basic and specialized firefighting tools, including ladders, rescue tools, and nozzles, and understands fire control principles, strategies, and techniques for hazardous environments; responding to hazardous material releases, using protective gear and control equipment to stop or contain the release; applying procedures to maintain, inspect, and test firefighting vehicles and equipment, and using emergency responses to utilize effective search and rescue strategies.

    The following certification levels are the minimum qualification standard for the position. Individuals must be certified at these levels before being eligible to fill the grade and/or position.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

    Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or pass the test. You will be subject to random testing.

    You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.

    You will be required to work an uncommon tour of duty (may include weekend, nights, overtime, or holidays) and rotating shift work.

    You will be required to work hours and conditions that are in close contact with Supervisors and coworkers for long periods of time (24 to 72 hrs.)

    You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.

    This position is designated emergency essential personnel and the position is subject to recall.

    You are required to wear a uniform and maintain appearance and grooming standards per Marine Corps Orders/Policies

    This position requires rotating shift work.

    You will be required to participate in the Department of Defense Fire and Emergency Services Certification Program

    You will be required to maintain compliance with NFPA 1582 (Fire Fighter Physical Medical Evaluations), NFPA 1583 (Fire Fighter Fitness Program Requirements

    You will be required to participate in the mandatory F&ESD Physical Fitness Program to maintain a level and degree of fitness needed to perform all duties.

    You will be required to obtain and maintain current FIREFIGHTER certifications: Hazardous Material Awareness, Hazardous Material Operations, and Hazardous Materials Technician.

    You will be required to possess and maintain certification a FIREFIGHTER I by the Department of Defense (DoD), International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or ProBoard.

    You will be required to possess and maintain certification a FIREFIGHTER II by the Department of Defense (DoD), International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or ProBoard.

    You will be required to possess and maintain a current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.

    You must possess a current National Registry or State Certification as Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).

    You may be required to work in high elevations and/or below ground in confined workspaces.

    You will be required to work hours and conditions under close contact with supervisors for long periods of time.

    You will be subject to adverse weather and/or harsh working conditions; burns, smoke inhalation, noxious fumes, falling materials, and explosions.

    You will be exposed to communicable diseases, unsanitary conditions and traumatic injuries.

    You will be required to possess and maintain the physical stamina, agility, and mental stability to work under conditions where intense periods of physical exertion and mental stress, under adverse conditions, may be encountered.

    You must be able to work under emergency conditions giving clear, definitive instructions, in a decisive manner to firefighting forces and other emergency service personnel.

    This position is performed indoors, outdoors, in all types of weather conditions and is subject to heat, cold, smoke, wind, humidity, and stress.

    This position requires the use of specialized protective clothing and respiratory protection.

    This position is subject to exposure from hazardous materials that include chemicals, fuels, biological agents, radioactive particles, and explosives.

    Education

    In lieu of specialized experience listed in the Qualifications section, applicants may qualify based on education OR equivalent combination of experience and education, as follows:

    *Appropriate firefighter training may be substituted for experience on a month-for-month basis*

    • I have successful completion of a 2-year course of study in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or other related fields of study OR
    • I possess a combination of experience and education as described above that equates to one year of experience. Percentage of the required education plus percentage of the required experience must equal one hundred percent.
    GS-05
    • I have successful completion of a 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university with major study in Fire Science, Fire Training, or other related fields of study OR
    • I possess a combination of experience and education as described above that equates to one year of experience. Percentage of the required education plus percentage of the required experience must equal one hundred percent.
