We are seeking a Pretrial Services Probation Officer to join our Division of Parole, Probation & Pretrial Services in Bismarck, North Dakota. In this critical role, you will support courts in informed decision-making, work with individuals prior to sentencing, and help reduce risk to both the community and the individual by supporting positive, sustainable progress before trial.
    This role focuses on individuals awaiting court disposition and differs from post-sentence probation supervision.

    Summary of Work

    As a Pretrial Services Probation Officer, you'll balance accountability with rehabilitation-conducting risk and needs assessments, developing individualized case plans, and connecting clients to services that support stability, compliance, and positive outcomes. Your work plays a vital role in promoting safer communities and supporting fair, informed court decisions.

    Key responsibilities include:
    • Supervise individuals placed on pretrial supervision, ensuring compliance with court-ordered conditions while supporting rehabilitation and stability
    • Conduct client intakes, risk assessments, and individualized case planning
    • Manage cases using evidence-based supervision strategies focused on behavior change
    • Complete pre-sentence investigations and court-ordered reports
    • Collaborate closely with courts, law enforcement, behavioral health providers, human service centers, and community organizations
    • Balance public safety responsibilities with support, accountability, and service coordination
    This position involves regular interaction with a wide range of justice system and community partners and requires strong communication, sound judgment, and organizational skills.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Applicants may be hired at the Pretrial Services Officer I or II level, depending on qualifications and experience.

    Pretrial Services Officer II
    • Bachelor's degree (preferred) in behavioral science, education, business, or a related field and
    • Three years of experience in corrections, law enforcement, social work, education, or behavioral health
      or
    • Associate's degree and five years of relevant experience as described above
    • Eligibility to be licensed as a North Dakota peace officer under ND Century Code Chapter 12-63
    • Must complete POST-recognized basic peace officer training
    • Valid Class D driver's license
    Pretrial Services Officer I
    • Bachelor's degree (preferred) in behavioral science, education, business, or a related field
      or
    • Associate's degree with two years of relevant experience in corrections, law enforcement, social work, education, or behavioral health
    • Eligibility to be licensed as a North Dakota peace officer
    • Valid Class D driver's license
    • Successful completion of a background investigation
    This role requires meeting established physical and professional standards consistent with peace officer certification. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of:
    • Physical examination
    • Drug testing
    • Psychological evaluation
    • Critical Task Assessment (CTA) fitness test (7 minutes, 15 seconds)
