    Extra-Help Security Positions

    This recruitment is being established to obtain a current eligible list for Extra-Help vacancies. Extra-Help are not entitled to county benefits and are limited to 25 hours a week. Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

    • Perform electronic and manual security/weapons screening at County and non-County contract entry door facilities.
    • Monitor access to assigned facilities.
    • Patrol and inspect an assigned area, generally on foot; controls access to County and/or contracted non-County property by ensuring evidence of proper authorization and identification.
    • Perform escort and security of inmates in hospital, mental health and other clinical situations.
    • Perform security of overlook stations of inmate break yard.
    • Ensure safety of nursing and medical staff.
    • Maintain security post; maintains radio communications with supervisor, law enforcement and correctional officer staff.
    • Monitor video surveillance cameras and security alarms as related to facility access doors.
    • Notify proper authorities of suspicious behavior of visitors or inmates.
    • Serve at a fixed post in an assigned County, Courts, or contracted non-County building or facility.
    • Protect persons and property to prevent the concealment of any improper goods, weapons, or property of any kind.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Special Requirements: Be at least 18 years of age upon appointment; pass Sheriff Department background investigation; within six months of employment successfully complete a training course administered by the Sheriff Department in self-defense; restraint; pepper spray; and impact weapons for self-defense. If upon appointment the applicant does not possess PC 832, they must successfully complete PC 832 within one year of appointment. Education: Graduation from high school or successful completion of GED; higher education preferred. Experience: Law Enforcement, Corrections or military experience preferred.

    Essential Functions:

    • Frequent operation of personal computer and other modern office equipment.
    • Frequent concentration, public contact and good decision making.
    • Ability to relate positively and impartially with persons of differing ethnic, economic, and social backgrounds by maintaining a courteous attitude when dealing with the public and staff.
    • Repetitive motion, sitting for long periods, walking.
    • Occasional standing, pushing, pulling, bending, squatting, climbing.
    • Lifting – Frequently 5 pounds or less; occasionally 5 to 30 pounds.
    • Constant good overall vision and reading and close-up work.
    • Frequent color perception and use of eye/hand coordination.
    • Occasional use of depth perception and peripheral vision.
    • Normal dexterity with frequent writing.
    • Frequent hearing of normal speech, hearing/talking on the telephone, talking in person.
    • Some assignments may require working weekends, nights, and/or occasional overtime.
    • Regular attendance is an essential function.
