    Head Guard

    Performs the duties of the lifeguard: Responsible for the safety, supervision, and discipline of all persons using deep or shallow water pool facilities. Works under direct supervision of Pool Manager. Performs the duties of the pool manager in his/her absence at pools: Responsible for the safety and supervision of a pool facility, staff, participants, supplies and equipment. Responsible for pool instructional and special event programs and customer service. Responsible for memberships and the revenue collection process, and the duties of the pool manager in his/her absence. Responsible for the safety and supervision of a pool facility, staff participants, supplies and equipment. Must be able to supervise staff and administer pool operations. Must have current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training/First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer/AED certifications. American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification preferred. American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certification preferred. Must be able to work with minimum supervision. Must successfully pass annual lifeguard water skills review test. Attend Pool Manager/Head Guard training, gate monitor training, preseason training, and on-site pool training. Must be 18 years of age or older. Must wear Department of Recreation staff swimwear.

    Minimum Qualifications (KSAs)

    Knowledge of: Good Customer Service Principles and techniques of water safety, lifeguarding, CPR and First Aid; and pool maintenance General administrative and management principles and the ability to apply these principles to daily swimming pool activities Principles and practices of organization, administration, supervision, and personnel management Principles of effective scanning Principle of zone coverage

    Skills to: Coordinate multiple assignments Organize and prioritize tasks Analyze situations carefully and adopt effective courses of action Work with minimum supervision Maintain confidentiality of records, actions and events Speak effectively on the phone and in person

    Ability to: Implement any American Red Cross Skill / Rescue to the highest standard Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, employees, instructors, and the general public Provide assistance and/or accommodations to include participants with disabilities. Write legibly Use English accurately Complete appropriate paperwork accurately Make sound judgments based on logical analysis and training Follow all safety rules and regulations of the department to which assigned Identify and respond to issues, concerns, and needs.

    Required Education and Experience

    Must be 18 years of age or older.

    Must have current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training / First Aid, and CPR for the Professional Rescuer/AED certifications (unexpired).

    Must successfully pass annual lifeguard water skills review test with a minimum of 80% proficiency.

    Current Lifeguard Instructor Certification preferred.

    Current Water Safety Instructor Certification preferred

    Must be able to work with minimum supervision. Must attend Pool Manager/Head Guard training, gate assistant training, preseason training, and on-site pool training. Must wear assigned Department of Recreation staff uniforms. Unexpired certification must be maintained as part of employment. This position may require working a flexible schedule which may include evenings, weekends and holidays.

    Working and Physical Conditions

    Environmental Conditions: While performing the duties of this job the employee is subjected to outdoor weather conditions with little to no temperature control; is routinely exposed to the sun, may be exposed to extreme heat, cold, wind, and rain. Works on uneven and/or slippery surfaces and is periodically exposed to hazardous conditions/situations and substances.

    Physical Conditions: Duties require maintaining physical conditions necessary for swimming, standing and walking for prolonged periods of time, lifting of up to 50lbs, and repairing minor fence cuts. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required stand, walk, or sit for long periods of time, and occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch. Must be able to differentiate between colors and shades of color.
