    Overview

    The role of a 911 Dispatcher I is to receive, evaluate, input and retrieve data pertaining to emergency/non-emergency calls for service to/from various Public Safety Units (City/County Law Enforcement, Fire/EMS) and City Departments; serving as a communications link between the public and other governmental entities.

    Primary Responsibilities

    Answer emergency/non-emergency calls for service, determining nature and urgency of calls. Assist with pre-arrival medical information, following protocol, such as CPR, Heimlich, child birth, and instruction in first aid; dispatching calls for service to appropriate personnel/departments. This position requires you to work shift work, in addition to nights, weekends, and holidays for a 24-7 operation - to provide prompt quality service in a caring, resourceful, and professional manner to the citizens and visitors of Corpus Christi and those we serve.

    Responsibilities

    • Provide emergency services by acquiring a general understanding of potential hazards, dangers, and safety/security issues

    • Basic knowledge of emergency/non-emergency situations, codes, and procedures

    • General knowledge of local/surrounding geographical area

    • Basic knowledge and operation of Telecommunications Device for the Deaf (TDD)

    • Basic computer skills to receive and relay pertinent information accordingly

    • Answer emergency/non-emergency calls for service, determine nature and urgency of call

    • Calm often hysterical citizens who are victims of a crime

    • Decipher appropriate activity code for responder accordingly and input all pertinent data into computer, update caller on call status and maintain communication

    • Operate tools and equipment to input, retrieve, or dispatch calls for service

    • Operate the various radio talk groups to assist law enforcement, Fire & EMS field units on or off-duty with field requests

    • Monitor Police, County, 911, Animal Control, RTA, and Marina Patrol talk groups for emergency requests for assistance

    • Routinely check criminal history information for officers, interpret records to determine if the person detained by officers is the person wanted on the warrant, check for wanted or missing persons, stolen or recovered property

    • Enter and delete data into state/nationwide database computer system on missing persons, stolen/recovered vehicles and property, threats against officers

    • Compose and send Teletype messages to other law enforcement/governmental agencies/entities to confirm wanted, missing, lost, stolen/recovered persons

    • Assist internal and external customers with requests in researching, analyzing, and resolving inquiries, situations, or issues pertaining to calls for service

    • Assist with entries/deletions, criminal histories, protective orders, and various other incidents

    • Dispatch calls for service to appropriate personnel/departments after normal business hours or on weekends, i.e., animal control, vector control; re-route non-emergency calls for service to corresponding department/division, i.e., gas department, CPL/AEP, street department, etc

    • Cross-train co-workers and instruct others on the duties and essential functions of a dispatcher including primary training on Call-Taking, Fire Radio, Law Enforcement Radio, and Information Radio after certified in position, as directed

    • Acquire the skills necessary to operate a working talk group and facilitate units in the field with updated information and various recourses available to all

    • Maintain accurate records, status, and times of all involved

    • May be asked to perform other duties as assigned

    Position Type and Typical Hours of Work

    • Non-exempt - Full-Time

    • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is a schedule requirement

    • Available weekends/ nights/ holidays

    Qualifications

    • High School Diploma / GED

    • Six (6) months to one (1) year of experience

    **Experience may be waived for applicants that have successfully completed the MetroCom Enrichment Program**

    Licenses and Certifications

    Required within six (6) months of hire

    • CJIS Awareness

    • NCIC/ TCIC full access

    Required within one (1) year of hire

    • TCOLE Basic Telecommunication License

    • Basic CPR instructions with AED and first aid

    • Emergency Medical Dispatch Certification

    • TDD instruction

    Employment is contingent on passing any post-offer pre-employment screening as listed below:

    • Police Criminal Background Check: Yes

    • Motor Vehicle Record Check: Yes

    • Drug Screening: Yes

    • Physical Exam: Yes

    • Psychological evaluation: Yes

    Basis of Rating

    A recruitment consultant will evaluate all applications against the posted qualifications and may request additional information. The city may also conduct additional skill assessment tests, in addition to the panel interview.
