    Position Description

    Tacoma Power’s Transmission & Distribution (T&D) section is looking for an Engineering Support Supervisor to provide leadership within the Engineering Products and Services team.

    This position directs, supervises, and evaluates the day-to day activities of personnel responsible for prioritizing improvements to the GIS product; managing the backlog of GIS data, mapping, and drawing updates from work orders and other sources, including service points, pole attachments, and connection objects for advancement to the Outage Management System; responding to PDRs related to GIS data and/or mapping products; and generating specialty mapping products and GIS data queries. The staff supervised provide critical support to operations, asset management, joint use permitting, and engineering personnel, and the data and products owned and managed by the supervised work group are essential to the safe, reliable and affordable construction, maintenance, and operation of Tacoma Power’s electric utility transmission and distribution system.

    Responsibilities Include:
    Supervision & Leadership
    • Lead, direct, and evaluate engineering technicians and analysts responsible for maintaining and improving GIS data, maps, and drawings.
    • Facilitate staff meetings and participate as part of the T&D Engineering leadership team.
    • Serve as GIS Data Owner and act as a sponsor on GIS and AutoCAD standards committees.
    • Oversee contractors and augmented resources; support contractor selection and manage contracts as needed.
    GIS Data Quality, Service Levels & Process Improvements
    • Manage backlog of GIS data updates from work orders, service points, pole attachments, and other sources.
    • Negotiate and define service levels for data accuracy and timeliness; deploy appropriate tools and processes to meet expectations.
    • Develop and refine SOPs, performance metrics, and workflows related to GIS data management and drawing production.
    • Identify customer needs (e.g., Asset Management, Line Operations, Locators) and manage expectations through clear communication.
    Personnel Management
    • Communicate performance expectations and provide coaching, feedback, and growth opportunities to staff.
    • Form hiring panels, conduct interviews, recommend hiring decisions, and onboard new staff.
    • Conduct probationary reviews and ongoing one-on-one meetings.
    Workload & Resource Management
    • Coordinate staffing, cross-training, and resource allocation within Engineering Products & Services to meet business priorities.
    • Assign projects and general areas of responsibility to engineering technicians and analysts.
    • Review and approve staff leave requests and telework agreements and manage scheduling.
    Financial Stewardship
    • Advise on cost center Operations & Maintenance budget development and propose detailed cost-element recommendations.
    • Monitor budget performance and prepare spending projections.
    • Review and approve overtime, time entry, and travel expenses within authority; recommend travel authorizations.
    • Approve purchases within delegated authority.


    Qualifications

    Minimum Education*
    Bachelor's degree in GIS, engineering, planning or directly related field

    Minimum Experience
    5 years of directly related experience in providing support functions to engineers including 1 year prior at senior, lead and/or supervisory level

    *Relevant education and experience may substitute for one another on a year-for-year basis

    Direct Deposit: Employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule by direct deposit.

    Salary Increases: Based on satisfactory job performance, the City provides for a regular progression of salary increases for most classifications according to the salary schedule.

    Union Affiliation: Many job classifications are covered by union security provisions which require union membership, dues, or payment of equivalent service fees.
