    OC PUBLIC WORKS
    OC Public Works (OCPW) provides services on a regional basis to unincorporated areas, to cities, and to other County agencies and departments. The primary mission of the department is to protect and enrich the community through the sustainable delivery of projects and services.     OCPW is a unique County department comprised of ten (10) service areas: Administrative Services, Agricultural Commissioner/Sealer of Weights & Measures; OC Construction; OC Development Services; OC Environmental Resources; OC Facilities Design & Construction and CUF; OC Facilities Maintenance & OC Fleet Services; OC Infrastructure Programs; OC Operations & Maintenance.

    OC Fleet Services

    OC Fleet Services delivers high-quality fleet management services to the County in a cost-effective and efficient manner. Fleet Services supports the County vehicle and heavy equipment fleet, including light-duty vehicles, heavy equipment, diesel-powered equipment, natural gas-powered equipment, alternative fuel assets, and specialized public safety equipment.

    THE OPPORTUNITY
    The Fleet Services Parts Technician (Warehouse Worker II) assigned to OC Fleet Services performs a variety of detailed warehouse, inventory, and fleet-parts support duties. The position is responsible for receiving, stocking, issuing, researching, ordering, and tracking parts and supplies used in vehicle and equipment maintenance operations. The position requires independent judgment in applying correct procedures, communicating with technicians and vendors, and using computerized inventory and fleet management systems. As a knowledgeable and customer service-orientated Parts Technician, this position ensures that the right part is provided at the right time to keep part inventories low and reduce waste within a heavy operational automotive shop.
    The job duties include but are not limited to:
    • Maintaining an inventory of diverse automotive parts ranging from simple and easily procured parts to complex and hard to find parts
    • Processing parts orders and routing the requested items to the requestor in a timely manner
    • Communicating and coordinating with vendors to research and procure necessary items and solve shipping and delivery issues
    • Maintaining accurate and complete records of supplies and parts that are issued and received
    • Reduce waste by implementing and following sound inventory control practices
    • Investigating inventory discrepancies to locate and correct errors
    • Assist in conducting the annual inventory audit and ongoing cycle count

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS AND CORE COMPETENCIES
    The ideal candidate will have a minimum of six (6) months of warehouse, inventory, fleet parts, or automotive/heavy equipment parts experience and will possess or be able to obtain forklift certification as required by the assignment.

    Technical Expertise
    • Ability to research, identify, obtain, receive, stock, issue, and track vehicle and equipment parts, accessories, tools, and shop supplies
    • Proficient in using fleet management information systems (FMIS), computerized inventory systems, scanners, handheld devices, email, and related software to document parts activity and inventory transactions
    • Experienced in preparing requisitions, communicate with vendors, review orders, receive deliveries, process stock, and support just-in-time inventory practices
    • Knowledgeable in parts warehouse management methods, including stocking, issuing, cycle count support, inventory control, returns, core tracking, and safe storage of equipment and supplies
    • Capable of interpreting labels, part numbers, schematics, wire colors, shop information, vendor catalogs, order documents, and related inventory information
    • Skilled in the operation of warehouse equipment, hand trucks, pallet jacks, forklifts, and light trucks as required by assignment

    Customer Service Skills
    • Ability to interact professionally with technicians, supervisors, vendors, departments, and internal customers in a professional and courteous manner
    • Adept at anticipating parts and inventory needs that affect maintenance workflow, repair timeliness, and vehicle availability
    • Proven success in establishing productive working relationships with internal and external customers while maintaining accurate records and accountability

    Communication & Collaboration
    • Skilled at collaborating with technicians to identify correct parts needed for overhauling and repairing light, heavy, alternative fuel, diesel-powered, and natural gas-powered equipment and related systems
    • Strong capability to exchange information accurately and concisely, both orally and in writing
    • Experienced in interpreting, applying, and following oral and written instructions, policies, procedures, safety rules, and work orders
    • Effective in communication with supervision, co-workers, technicians, vendors, and the public as required by assignment

    Safety Conscious
    • Ability to apply safe lifting practices and safe material-handling methods when moving parts, equipment, and supplies
    • Competent in safely handling storage, receipt, issuance, transport, and handling of tools, parts, chemicals, and other shop-related equipment
    • Proficient at recognizing and reporting safety hazards in warehouse, shop, office, and field environments
    • Committed to using required safety equipment, which may include safety shoes or boots, safety glasses or face shields, gloves, hearing protection, rain attire, and other personal protective equipment

    REQUIRED LICENSE

    Possession of a Class C California Driver License is required before the date of appointment and while employed in this classification. Driving record must not have a citation for reckless driving or a citation related to driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol or other restrictions that negatively impact insurability.

    Special Requirements

    In some assignments, incumbents may be required to obtain and maintain a Forklift Operator certificate.

    RECRUITMENT PROCESS

    Based on the Department's needs, the selection procedures listed above may be modified. All candidates will be notified of any changes in the selection procedure.

    Eligible List
    Once the assessments have been completed, HRS will establish an eligible list of candidates. Candidates placed on the eligible list may be referred to a selection interview to be considered for present and future vacancies.
