    GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

    Under the direction of the Lead Maintenance Specialist, this position performs complex (journey-level) building maintenance and construction work and is responsible for assisting with daily maintenance and repairs of facilities, grounds, and equipment of Galveston Island State Park. Performs preventative maintenance (inspecting/cleaning) of facilities, group areas, grounds and camping areas as needed. Operates all types of equipment such as trucks, tractors, mowers, power tools and other gasoline powered equipment. Provides quality visitor services by issuing permits, collecting revenue, providing information, and registering visitors using an automated registration system. Assists with enforcing park rules and regulations to ensure visitor safety and protection of park resources. Performs resource management tasks and interpretation of natural resources. Serves as the Appointed Duty Safety Officer and completes all safety inspections and reports to maintain compliance. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations, and procedures.


    Qualifications:

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education:

    Graduation from High School or GED.

    Experience:

    Three years of facility, equipment, or grounds maintenance experience.

    Licensure:

    Must possess a valid State driver's license.

    Note: Retention of position contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required license.

    ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS:

    Experience:

    Thirty semester hours from an accredited college or university may substitute for one year of the required experience, with a maximum substitution of two years.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education:

    Vocational training in areas such as electrical, carpentry, mechanical, or plumbing repairs.

    Experience:

    Experience working with the public.

    Experience coordinating and facilitating a formal safety program.

    Experience working with personal computers, MS Office Suite-Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, TEAMS, cloud-based platforms, file sharing, and internet.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    Knowledge of general custodial duties and maintenance techniques.

    Knowledge of building and facility repair techniques such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical, equipment and vehicle repair and grounds maintenance.

    Knowledge of safety program operations and associated reporting requirements and procedures.

    Knowledge of basic mathematics.

    Skill in using MS Word, Excel and Outlook.

    Skill in effective verbal and written communication.

    Skill in using standard office equipment.

    Skill in using hand and power tools, mowers, trimmers, chainsaw, tractors, vehicles, generators and other mechanical equipment.

    Skill in providing quality customer service in a courteous and professional manner.

    Skill in establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with co-workers and work-related contacts.

    Ability to create basic reports.

    Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.

    Ability to work as a member of a team.

    Ability to conduct and maintain safety program.

    Ability to handle multiple tasks and projects.

    Ability to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.

    Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program.

    WORKING CONDITIONS :

    Required to work in public park with overnight camping.

    Required to work 40 hours per week, includes various schedules with hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and days off other than Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

    Required to respond emergencies and on-call situations.

    Required to work overtime as necessary.

    Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.

    Required to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.

    Required to operate a State vehicle.

    Required to travel 5% with possible overnight stays.

    Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules and safety procedures.

    Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
